Summary
Injury. Adrenaline. Addiction. These are the things that fuelled one man's race to international stardom as he pushed boundaries and took life on and off the bike to the limits.
Starting out as a talented youth riding the desert tracks of California, his reckless nature and incredible talent earned him a position in the rarefied world of professional motorcycle racing. Despite the success in his professional life, his personal life was crumbling around him - John was battling with depression and temptation, which began to threaten his career, health and marriage, ultimately bringing him to a life of alcoholism, addiction and even smuggling.
In his remarkable memoir, one of the world's most renowned riders takes us on a raw and unique journey to the extremes of fast living.
John 'Hopper' Hopkins is an icon for motorsport fans worldwide. He won't let anything hold him back. He has broken almost every bone in his body (twice), suffered a bleed on the brain and had a finger amputated...yet he continued to race. Finally, at the age of 35 - with his latest crash at Brands Hatch in 2017 putting him in rehab for two years - he decided to hang up his helmet.
Leathered tells the incredible story of an unparalleled career. From bone-crunching injuries and alcohol-fuelled antics to the breakdown of his marriage, it unveils the true stories behind the lurid headlines.

Loved it!
Have read many sports bios and particularly bike racing ones, this is right up there... An incredibly honest account of an extraordinary life on the pipe. If you know Hopper, like racing bios or sports ones, don't even hesitate- this is binge-worthy/un-put-downable.

Wow !
I really didn’t expect a warts and all biography of Johns life and as a manic motorcycle enthusiast who has been sober for nearly ten years myself the way he explains the highs and lows of the sport and lifestyle that goes with it, it struck many chords with me and reminded me also of moments I’m not proud of. All together a fantastic book which I recommend to anyone.
I’ve seen John in the paddock at silverstone and knowing a bit about him I had never approached thinking what would I have to offer a super star like him ? If I have that chance again I will definitely congratulate him on a wonderful career and an excellent book.

First audio book ive tried and really got into it. Really open honest account of his racing and his struggles and I think this book will go on to help a lot of people who have found themselves in John's position.

A deep insight to a real Racer.
A detailed insight to the life of a Racer with the addictions to go with it. The injuries alone that John Hopkins has gone through, you couldn't believe but shows what is possible and why Racers find it hard to stop.

Jaw dropper,from Hopper.
Amazingly open, brutally honest, jaw dropping, loved it from start to finish. How this lad from humble beginnings raced motorcycles all the way to the top, the torture of breaking so many bones is astonishing, it’s also very funny.

WOW, amazing
Such an amazing insight into the head & broken body of a former pro bike racer.
Never knew he had so many injuries & operations.
Best of luck in his new role as rider trainer.

what's with the narrator's ever changing voice!?
I'm a huge 2 wheel motorsport fan and love the hopper... this really gave me a glimpse into the struggles he had (albeit he can appear a little neurotic at times!) but his raw talent and determination saw him through .. I watched that 6000th sec Brands Hatch BSB finale and it lives strong in my memory, no two riders have ever gone so hard so often at corners that simply don't allow that kind of racing, truly awesome, go watch it on the tube... and it's a tribute to his personality and talent that he now works back in Moto GP for American Racing bringing on the next generations.... great listen, patchy narration due to odd vocal changes at chapters...
