Summary

Zach is 18. He is bright and articulate. He's also an alcoholic and in rehab instead of high school, but he doesn't remember how he got there. He's not sure he wants to remember. Something bad must have happened. Something really, really bad. Remembering sucks and being alive—well, what's up with that?

Critic reviews

"Sáenz' poetic narrative will captivate readers from the first sentence to the last paragraph of this beautifully written novel.... It is also a celebration of life and a song of hope in celebration of family and friendship, one that will resonate loud and long with teens." ( Kirkus Reviews)
"There is never a question of either Sáenz’s own extraordinary capacity for caring and compassion or the authenticity of the experiences he records in this heartfelt account of healing and hope." ( Booklist)
"Offering insight into [an adolescent's] addiction, dysfunction and mental illness, particularly in the wake of traumatic events, Sáenz's artful rendition of the healing process will not soon be forgotten." ( Publishers Weekly)

Powerful stuff

Any additional comments?

This very well told story of 18 year old Zach's time in a rehab centre for acholism is a powerful and heart-rending narrative. There is no sentimentality and yet all that is best in human kindness and respect is there.
The reading is equal to the story, a credible and emotional voice that puts you firmly in Zach's world.
Very moving.

Inspired

A beautiful and powerful book. I arrived here from A&D discover the secrets...., which was incredibly written and altogether inspired and this is equally brilliant. Benjamin Sáenz has a wonderful way about his writing which is insightful, engaging and just human I guess. The narration is one of the best, if not, THE best and fits so well. This is categorised as 'Young Adult' but honestly needs to be further reaching - it's for all. Hidden gem is an understatement.

A wonderful, wonderful book

A real tear jerker, but without any cloying sentimentality. We travel with Zac on his road from a traumatic past and to sobriety and a hopeful future. The story, told in the first person is excellently written; a real triumph for the author, Benjamin Alire Saenz. Thank god for writers like yourself.

MacLeod Andrews really stuns me out! 😍

Any additional comments?

Mr. Benjamin Alire Saenz wrote ✨ HAPPINESS✨ on my heart when he created this lovely, dark, heartbreaking, life altering, never give up on yourself work of art!

The inside look into those who suffer so many different types of depressions either biologically or from a traumatic event that took place in their life is not only heartbreaking, but scary. And how lucky are we to live in a country where asking for help shows the true strength of someone who wants to better themselves physically and mentally?

Raphael was my hero.

Adam, my Angel.

And Zack, my quiet heart.

Best moment: Meeting Raphael again. 💖

WOW

Beautiful. Moving. Heartfelt. Deep. I love this book with my whole heart. I cried so many times throughout the book- I’m actually crying right now as I write this because it moved me so deeply. Benjamin Alire Saenz has done it again…outdone himself, really. Also, the performance was excellent. Probably the best performance I’ve heard so far on Audible so far.

Amazing! I love this book.

I am a person who doesn’t like reading I find it “boring”, and that’s just me but there are some books out there that really peak my interest, and this is one of them. I love the detail and how relatable this book is. I would recommend this book to everyone and anyone who needs a book. This was an amazing listen.

Best book I've listened to in years!

If you personally have lived with a person dealing with addiction or death then this book is for you. I laughed and cried through the entire book. I'm proud to say that Mr Benjamin Alire Saenz is from my neck of the woods, El Paso, TX! And MacLeod Andwers...still the best narrator in my book!

Singing to the Monster

A wonderful young adult that is terrific for older readers also. It had me from the line where the main character says " I have sad written on my heart". It deals with tough issues in such a positive way.

Masterpiece

Painful topics dealt with but in a masterful way. At times the writing style reminded me of Dostoevsky. Suspect the author had to experience some dark places in order to write so eloquently about those same places. Gratitude for authors who have experienced trial by fire and have the talent to share what that experience is like. Narrator was top notch. Very easy on the ears which allowed me to just fall into the story. This is one of the best books on audible that you can purchase.
