Summary

When your life is a lie, who can you trust?

When Maggie Taylor accepts a new job in Manchester, she is sure it is the right move for her family. The children have settled well, although her husband, Duncan, doesn't appear to be so convinced. But nothing prepares her for the shock of coming home from work one night to find that Duncan has disappeared, leaving their young children alone. His phone is dead, and she has no idea where he has gone or why. And then she discovers she's not the only one looking for him.

When a woman who looks just like Maggie is brutally murdered and DCI Tom Douglas is brought in to investigate, Maggie realises how little she knows about Duncan's past. Is he the man she loves? Who is he running from?

She doesn't have long to decide whether to trust him or betray him. Because one thing has been made clear to Maggie - another woman will die soon, and it might be her.

A Smooth and Classy Thriller

Another classy, smooth thriller from Rachel Abbott. This one follows the incidence of a set of murders mimicking a similar series from a dozen years ago. Linking the two is DCI Tom Douglas of course and compared to the previous book in the series, Stranger Child, he is more prominent. It reads much more like a police drama as a result. Still though Abbott’s skill in gradually building the pressure and stress on her female lead Maggie is the key to the book. The increasing fear and paranoia result in both her and Douglas feeling the heat with the story cleverly entwining someone close to the policeman as well.

The narration of the story is very well handled by Lisa Coleman as it twists and turns its way to what I thought was an impressive conclusion. Who could anyone trust? Why were these strange and horrifying events occurring? Who was manipulating those events? Both Maggie and Tom get a thorough testing and emerge as strong characters with a varied and well detailed supporting cast. The reveals and twists that brought the novel to and end were very satisfying.

In short this is a smooth, well written and intelligent thriller. Although it’s a series I think it would still be very satisfying taken alone. A strong story and very, very well worth a credit.

Good enough for 3 stars, but! No spoilers!

Any additional comments?

I really like Rachel Abbott's work, and this book is up to her usually standard in the quality of writing and flow of the story. She writes dialogue really well, and the standard of that often makes or breaks a book for me. Despite all this, I'm struggling with this one. I'm a couple of chapters from then end and it has grated and annoyed me from quite early on. The problem is with the main character Maggie. She is a successful Criminal Defence Lawyer. Yet, she repeatedly makes silly decisions, which, though plausible if she only had to be concerned about her self, don't ring true in a mother who is an intelligent professional women, who works in criminal law. I have given this 3 stars for the quality of the writing, and because some people won't be troubled by what spoilt it for me. However, I experienced it a 2 star read and I'm not sure I can be bothered to be irritated further by finishing it.

Oh for God's sake, just tell the police.

Would you try another book written by Rachel Abbott or narrated by Lisa Coleman?

I'm afraid not. Way too convoluted.

Has Kill Me Again put you off other books in this genre?

No, because it's my favourite genre. But this book is ridiculous and cliched from start to finish.

What three words best describe Lisa Coleman’s voice?

Concerned, determined. Professional.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Exasperation

Any additional comments?

I'm sorry my first review has to be so negative. I'm shy about reviewing, and have loved tens of books through audible. But, honestly, if the main character had done the sensible thing in the first 20 pages of the book, there would have been no need for the rest of it.

Ok But Reservations

Not a bad read but the main character is completely unbelievable as a trained criminal lawyer making absurd decisions. Narration is quite good - just about worth a credit.

First time for everything

This is my first time listening to an Audio book and certainly won't be my last. Equally it was my first book by Rachel Abbott and again it won't be my last. Gripping from start to finish, and beautifully read by Lisa Coleman. My dilemma now is which one do I listen to next!

Just Wow!

Any additional comments?

Quite possibly my best listen for quite some time. This book has it all. Intrigue, mystery, spookiness and a real ability to draw out a range of emotions.
This story made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up on more than one occasion! the story is very gripping and its very easy to put yourself in the shoes of the main character, eliciting various emotional responses as the story progresses.
For a decent crime story, I couldn't recommend this more!

Good story, narration needs work

This is a great gripping story, paced well and quite addictive once you get into it. The narration is pretty poor, and the narrator can only seem to do women's speech with any kind of plausible emotion and intonation. The narrative is incredibly robotic and ALL of the men's voices, perhaps in a bid to sound more masculine, have the cadence of "Let's lock and load!". Except they are saying thinks like "are you ok? I was worried about you", but it just sounds like "Let's lock and load!" It's actually hilarious but ruins the story a bit.
