Story
On his last combat deployment, Lt. Cmdr. James Reece's entire team was killed in an ambush that also claimed the lives of the aircrew sent in to rescue them. But when those dearest to him are murdered on the day of his homecoming, Reece discovers that this was not an act of war by a foreign enemy but a conspiracy that runs to the highest levels of government. Now, with no family and free from the military's command structure, Reece applies the lessons that he's learned in over a decade of constant warfare toward revenge.

My master created me for his entertainment, leading adventurers to ruin. Betraying them at the last moment, just when their glorious victory was on hand. I have been found again by the newest member of a quartet of dungeon crawlers. Poor fool. This time will be no different. Or does it have to be? Awesome narration!
The Narration was spot on.
The MC i enjoyed alot and his dialogue with Turk made me chuckle. But the lesbian sup-plot is what ruined it for me. The build up to the plot twist was absolute camel faeces.
If the author had invested the back story into the main Villain with the chapters he wrote about the hated lesbian subplot i would of totally 5 starred this review.

Get this while you wait for Winds of Winter
New York Times Best-Selling author of Joe Ledger and other blockbuster thrillers, Jonathan Maberry brings us Kagen the Damned, the first highly anticipated book in a new and exciting series of dark fantasy novels featuring unlikely heroes, remarkable characters, a sprawling world, dark magic, war, and exotic locations.
I loved it from the first chapter and wasn’t able to stop listening until late into the night. I picked it up again early in the morning and just now finished listening. The writing is excellent, the plot moves fast, the action is furious, bloody, gory, visceral and extremely entertaining. I like the world, the characters are colorful and flawed, the setting feels original and the story is intriguing.
If you’re curious to find out more about the story and the world you can read the publisher’s summary, but I highly recommend that you just dive right into this new instant classic! This is an epic and spellbinding adventure that in the years to come will stand shoulder to shoulder with other Giants in the fantasy genre, such as The Wheel of Time or A Song of Ice and Fire!
Award-Winning voice-over actor and narrator Ray Porter perfectly captures the feel and atmosphere of this universe and gives life with talent and passion to Kagen and other secondary characters. He reads with enthusiasm and talent, he acts and he makes this wonderful epic adventure even more enjoyable for the listener.
He manages to deliver the perfect performance and at the same time elevates the audio production to the highest level of immersion possible.
It seems that Ray can perform anything flawlessly! From funny science fiction to thrillers, to sweeping crime sagas such as The Cartel Trilogy by Don Winslow, to mysteries and now even to dark fantasy, Ray is a force of nature, he shouts in all the right moments. He is sad, funny, scary or neutral as the plot dictates it.
If you like dark fantasy, you will definitely appreciate the way Mr. Maberry writes. I highly recommend that you just purchase this audiobook and enjoy it while we all wait for Winds of Winter to be released. I guess that it is a real possibility to get more books from Jonathan Maberry in this series before that even happens.
I hope that you also found this review helpful. Take care, stay safe and don’t forget, always listen with your heart!

A beast of a tale with award worthy narration
I will admit, some of it was hard, but that fault is entirely my own. I am also not a huge fantasy fan, I am very selective. This epic has checked all my boxes so far. I always knew Jonathan would spill very haunting and spellbinding tale. It feels entirely unique, one of a kind. Ray's narration is truly award worthy. I can find no other example of a stellar performance, he is absolutely one of the very best.

If you make us wait a long time for the sequel, im never buying one of your books again! Ok, that's a lie, but seriously, please don't make us wait?
I love most of Mr Mayberrys work, and I'm now adding this one to the pile as well. It starts FAST, then gets a bit slow and repetitive for just a little bit, but then, wow. Really enjoyed this one. Mr Porter, as always, was awesome. Think if Mayberry wrote a phone book and Ray read it, I'd still like it...Well done sir's!

Kagan lives in a damned world
Epic fantasy is not my usual genre... while Ray Porter does a good job this story is a little too dark for me. There's also a lot of just sitting around talking and the action is mostly rape and getting drunk with a little fighting thrown in. I think Jonathan Maberry is quite brilliant but this is not my cup of tea.

The ending is very, very weak and disappointing.
This might be Maberry’s best work writing wise but the ending is very weak and the actually story and world development is extremely slow, to the point that much gets accomplished in this novel other than introducing the land and a few characters. Lots of things introduced but never followed up and character development is not as good as I expected from Jonathan Maberry. Lots of bladed fight scenes…to the point they get boring. Too much time spent on the raping and pillaging, it grows stale it is brought up so much. So I guess it’s not his best work because with that ending it seems like it could have been about 5 hours shorter and we wouldn’t have missed anything. We will have to wait till book 2 to see if this is going to be as good a series as the Ledger books. I honestly don’t think I would have gotten through it without Tay Porter’s excellent narration.

Useless pointless violence w zero plot
Maybe I didn’t listen long enough but there is zero character development. There is just repeated violence for no reason. The R word is mentioned a dozen times and the v card is brought up even more times then that. Personally not my kind of story when I don’t know anything about one single character. A nun who has to tell her novice all about the god they worship? Too implausible and Unenjoyable to listen further
