Summary

'We're spies,' said Lamb. 'All kinds of outlandish shit goes on.'

Like the ringing of a dead man's phone, or an unwelcome guest at a funeral....

In Slough House memories are stirring, all of them bad. Catherine Standish is buying booze again, Louisa Guy is raking over the ashes of lost love, and new recruit Lech Wicinski, whose sins make him outcast even among the slow horses, is determined to discover who destroyed his career, even if he tears his life apart in the process.

And with winter taking its grip Jackson Lamb would sooner be left brooding in peace, but even he can't ignore the dried blood on his carpets. So when the man responsible breaks cover at last, Lamb sends the slow horses out to even the score.

This time, they're heading into joe country.

And they're not all coming home.

exceptional..as ever

I have said it before and I will say it until the last sunset but the combination of the author and the narrator is a match made in heaven. the comedic yet poignant theme and character of every book it's just one small part of why my boundless happiness of starting each book by these two is nearly matched by my deep deep sorrow when I know the book is coming to an end. I want 100 more books of this fantastic platform that nick heron has created.

Joe Country

Mick Herron is just marvellous, and with the voice of the unrivalled Sean Barret how can this and the books in this series be described as anything but brilliant !

Losing the way in Joe Country

I’m sad to say that this series has begun to lose its way. The last instalment wasn’t great and this is pretty weak. Feels like the author has run out of ideas and is writing to a formula now. The story lacks nuance and the ‘big twist’ only goes to show that the characters have run out of road. I loved the first few of these but am not sure I’ll be buying the next one. Here is to hoping the TV series is as good as the first novels and Mr. Herron has the time to conjure up some fresh ideas. I’m sure his publishers won’t afford him this luxury, however.

A little disappointed...

Perhaps it was the anticipation... previously I was catching up with the series, but I didn't find this outing as satisfying as the previous ones. The final chapter wrapping up was too quickly done, as if the whole thing was written to a set length.
However the narration as ever was superb, and I think the "thinning out" of characters will help bring back the feeling of previous books.
I might have been a bit generous in my review score though. It was enjoyable but if you're new to Slough House and Jackson Lamb do start at the beginning of the series... please!

Great until the last lap

The characters, humour and atmosphere are brilliantly created by Mick Heron and the reading by Sean Barrett is superb, lifting the listening experience into the top of its class. In this book, however, the ending was a disappointment. Having engineered a complex situation, Mick basically took a massive shortcut and failed to resolve it with any satisfactory ending or endings. Anytime the reader ( or listener) has to depend on a detailed explanation of a series of critical events that took place “off camera”, the reader has been short changed. My hope is that Mick manages to improve the manner in which future resolutions are revealed to the reader/listener. Still, I’m looking forward to the next in the series.

Brilliant!

I've really enjoyed all of the books in this series and had been looking forward to this one, but had been put off by some of the negative reviews saying that the series had gone stale and I didn't want to be disappointed. Finally, in the absence of anything else to listen to, I decided that I'd give it a go, reasoning that anything Sean Barrett narrated couldn't be all bad. I'm so glad I did, I thought it was one of the best in the series. I suppose one listener's "good read" may be another's poison, but (and I might be wrong here), I also think that some of the story may not appeal to some with with a particular political view - however, this isn't a big part of the story. I thought it was clever, exciting, funny, poignant at times, I really enjoyed it.

Another 'Slow Horse' classic.

Jackson Lamb continues his acerbic direction of the 'Slow Horses' as they venture into 'Joe country' once more.

Oh dear

I've loved this series but perhaps it has now reached the end - indeed the ending suggests that may well be the case, unless Mick Herron has other plans for his characters. If you too have been following the slow horses you will want to (need to) listen to this. But it may be that I'm not alone in thinking this one isn't up to the standard we are used to.

comic genius

Jackson Lamb is my favourite comic character - the whole series of books sparkle with his wit and wisdom and the performance brilliantly brings him to life. Great entertainment.

Slough House and Sean Barret at their best

Title says it all. Brings home the pointless machinations of political power and money in a very contemporary setting. brilliant

Time for a break ..

After dosing up on Mick Herron and the Slough House series I need a break.
The author buries the plot with his efforts to paint a detailed picture on ..everything - far too detailed in most instances. He could ramble on with a 5 minute discourse on the waste bin it would seems. (Pick ANY other object ..there are ample).
You could jump an hour in from the start - and not miss any of the plot. It takes a long while to fully develop.
And we find ourselves switching location / scene without a pause. Makes it hard to follow ....
The first couple of books in the series were great. But it is time to give it a rest for now.

Highly Entertaining

Like other books in this series, the book is funny, well written and fast paced.
Just as important, the narration is superb!

Another great book

I eagerly waited for the release of this book and it didn't disappoint. Of the few constant Slough House regulars, Jackson Lamb is king. He is that ingredient that makes this series great.

Herron + Barrett = Genius

I have no idea if this is "literature" or not and don't much care. Herron's writing and Barrett's narration turn these novels into a wonderful listening experience.

I like this series about the slow horses

I like this series about the slow horses, Mick Herron's style of writing and Sean Barrett's narration are easy to listen to. His character developments provide solid background and the pace quickens as his plots become more mysterious and sinister. Jackson Lamb, River Cartwright and others continue their day to day drudgery at Slough House, as punishment for professional failure, with ocassional ventures into the world of real spies and espionage. This one, involving multiple murders, sees Cartwright's grandfather buried, his estranged American father return and Lamb manipulate a covert foreign agent. This series is in my library's top tier.

Don't Start Here...Get books 1 to 5 first

I've been waiting for the release of this book since last year. I had fears that it couldn't possibly live up to its predecessors but it was brilliant, as usual. Mick Herron is a master and works in some hilarious one-liners and that can't be easy when the topic (espionage) is so serious. Rich character development makes you feel like you know the main players. You'll be hooked after you start book 1.
