Summary

“Brant Pitre is one of the most compelling theological writers on the scene today.” (Bishop Robert Barron)

Best-selling author of Jesus and the Jewish Roots of the Eucharist casts new light on the Virgin Mary, illuminating her role in the Old and New Testaments.

Are Catholic teachings on Mary really biblical? Or are they the "traditions of men"? Should she be called the "Mother of God", or just the mother of Jesus? Did she actually remain a virgin her whole life, or do the "brothers of Jesus" refer to her other children? By praying to Mary, are Catholics worshiping her? And what does Mary have to do with the quest to understand Jesus?

In Jesus and the Jewish Roots of Mary, Dr. Pitre takes listeners step-by-step from the Garden of Eden to the Book of Revelation to reveal how deeply biblical Catholic beliefs about Mary really are. Dr. Pitre uses the Old Testament and ancient Judaism to unlock how the Bible itself teaches that Mary is in fact the new Eve, the Mother of God, the Queen of Heaven and Earth, and the new Ark of the Covenant.

Critic reviews

“Mystified by the way Catholics speak about Mary? Join the club! But if you - like me - have longed for a book that makes a good biblical case for Catholic teachings relating to Mary, then look no further! Brant Pitre has produced an absolutely riveting, page-turning read, surely the most thought-provoking and stimulating I have ever read on the subject.” (Chris Tilling, graduate tutor and senior lecturer in New Testament studies)

“I did not think a single book could be written about Mary that would excite and unite Catholic and Protestant readers - scholars, clergy and laity alike. What Pitre does with the Bible and Marian typology is clear and compelling. A joy to read, this is the best biblical study of Mary I have ever read. A true masterpiece.” (Scott Hahn, author of The Lamb's Supper and The Fourth Cup)

"Brant Pitre takes important theological truths and makes them not only interesting, but exciting. This book will revolutionize your understanding of the most important woman in history." (Jennifer Fulwiler, author of One Beautiful Dream)

Wonderful!

if they make it to heaven, biblical scholars will eventually come to realise that the Catholic Church had always been right in her teachings on Mary. Dr. Pitre is already there!

First class explanation of what Catholics have believed all along. Be surprised!

This is an excellent explanation of the reasons (Biblical and historical) why Catholics honour (not worship) Mary, the Mother of the Messiah. Highly recommended for believers and unbelievers alike.

Solid Biblical Teaching To End Misunderstanding of

At last, scriptural confirmation of what the Catholic church has been teaching since the beginning about Mary in a way that protestants can relate to. Hopefully this very important biblical exposition will open the way to understand why Mary is held in such high esteem and why she adds imeasurably to a full Christian life.

References

A lovely book well narrated unfortunately letdown by Scripture references in virtually every sentence, put the chap + verse refs in a separate place or refer people to the physical book.

A masterpiece!

This is the first book I have reviewed with that description, and considering it's genre, that's saying something. Every part of this book took all the questions I had, have had or had not yet anticipated and answered them. The content is meticulously researched and the writer cites all his sources making clear links, with no ambiguity. This book has been a true gift, and I am delighted to have found it. I have been on a journey to fully understand the Catholicism I grew up in, and can't seem to walk away from, so that I can fully immerse myself into all the aspects of the Catholic church without reservation. Until now, the subject of Mary is one I had never been able to explain, defend or articulate. Now I know, now I can confidently finally call her my mother with the full understanding of why I do it and who she really is. Thank you Dr Pitre. The narrator is an absolute joy to listen to.....he believes the content and he engages you, as he takes you on this in depth learning journey. If you, like me have questions, or just need clear demonstrated truths that are biblically, culturally and historically sound regarding the role of Mary in the Catholic church, this book is one NOT to miss.
