About this listen
We were prepared for an earthquake. We had a flood plan in place. We could even have dealt with zombies. Probably.
But no one expected the end to be quite so... sticky... or strawberry scented.
Yahtzee Croshaw (Mogworld, Zero Punctuation Reviews) returns to print with a follow-up to his smash-hit debut: Jam, a dark comedy about the one apocalypse no one predicted.

Another great story from Yahtzee
A great take on the apocalypse from a comedic viewpoint. The narrative is well balanced and the performance is very well done.

Perfect rendition of the book
The book was a scary example of what humanity might actually do faced with an apocalypse…

Stupid stupid characters
I believe this was Crosshaw's first novel and I listened to it after enjoying his later works and can see he improved massively with greater practice. There's still good moments and sardonic humour however the plot is basic with glaring checkov guns and his narration is weaker than in others due to bad accents. The thing that almost completely made me stop listening is the terrible stupid decisions made by the main characters. One decision in particular made me literally pause the book and consider whether to continue as it seemed such a stupid thing to do and only done to introduce conflict. I get that the characters are supposed to be dim and useless however at one point one of them magically gains the ability to work high powered weaponry and operate an aircraft carrier by themselves.

ironically enjoyable
Was really getting into this book for a while but honestly the cult almost made me want to stop. Felt like every time they appeared, it broke my engagement just for Yahtzee to give me a boring grammar lecture and rant about young people. Thankfully I'd say it got better at the end with an engaging tragic ending but I don't think it's one I'll listen to again.

Love his other books but
… wasn’t so keen on this one. Some of the narration ( Tim in particular) / accents or delivery really got on my nerves. The characters are fairly selfish and stupid - I can’t believe they would have stuck together any length of time. I stuck it out to the end but struggled with it. The last few hours felt like a chore.

Loved it!
I just love Crowshaw, he always makes me laugh out loud and this book was no different. I just wish I hadn’t listened to them all. I think I will have to start them all again.

A good earworm to pass long journey
As always impeccable delivery by Yahtzee (I adjust speed to 1.05 and that just makes us a bit smoother IMHO).
Story wasn't as strong as the Jaques McKeown or Mogworld books (I did enjoy the references to the latter). Unfair to say all the characters were underdeveloped as some good 'everyman almost hero' and 'Apocalypse Now' style descent into madness arcs worked for me.
However I don't know if the themes of futility and meaningless deaths really fitted into the narrative and the ending was rather unsatisfactory (again IMHO).
In conclusion; to put it into the world of Yahzee and Escapist, this was my FF8, some excellent set pieces, quite nicely rendered mechanics but let down by jarring plot points and only finished it out of obligation, won't replay unlike other bodies of work in the unconnected series 6.25/10

Sweet smelling death
Another great yarn from Mr Croshaw. If you've listened and liked any of his other books, then this won't disappoint.
