Summary

On Mother's Day, 1985, the bodies of Kathryn Eastburn and her two young daughters were found in their Fayetteville, North Carolina, home. Katie, an air force captain's wife, had been raped and stabbed to death. Kara and Erin's throats had been slit. Their toddler sister, Jana, was the only survivor of a bloody killing spree that terrified a community still reeling from the conviction, six years prior, of Dr. Jeffrey MacDonald for the savage slayings of his pregnant wife and two daughters.

The Cumberland County Sheriff's Department soon focused its investigation on US Army soldier Tim Hennis. Detectives and local prosecutors built their case on circumstantial evidence and a jury convicted Hennis and sentenced him to death. But his defense team refused to give up. Piece by piece, they discredited the state's case, exposing false testimony, concealed evidence, and prosecutorial misconduct. At a second trial, Hennis was found not guilty and released from death row.

But an even more stunning turn of events was yet to come. Twenty-five years after the murders, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation tested a crucial piece of DNA evidence from the crime scene. The shocking results led to an unprecedented third trial to determine Tim Hennis's guilt or innocence.

Superb!

Incredible story, all of which was new to me. One of the best true crime books I’ve encountered. Narration is good, too. My head is still spinning trying to make sense of the various outcomes.

Strange point of view

Feels like it’s told from the point of view of the evil murderer and his deluded family. Do you really expect us to feel sorry for them? The actual innocent victims are hardly mentioned. What a disgusting man still trying to get off.

Excellently recounted

If you like court room scenarios then this is for you. Very well told with no audio issues, I was hooked from the opening lines having not expected very much. A tale that will have you punching the air in triumph and putting your head in your hands with despair. A rollercoaster.

Very thorough

Interesting and thorough recount of the most relevant aspects of this thoroughly frustrating case - how can judges allow this to happen and refuse tests that would once and for all identify the culprit

Great listen, sad end

Really enjoyed this one, it’s scary how the judicial system can work at times. I would like to think he will get another chance to prove his innocence.

Great Listen but worrying outcomes

I was really gripped by this audio account. However I am shocked by all the deceit and coverups by the prosecution to get the result they wanted, and also by the army's ability to give him a fair trial. Totally disgusted by all the shenanigans and so sorry for Tim

A roller coaster like no other!

I read at keast 2 audiobooks per week and have done for over a decade. this is probably the most gripping read to date. They say truth is stranger than fiction..Well this book ultimately proves the point. I've never been so engrossed, gripped and ultimately shocked by a story. The author has nailed the genre in this book. I actually felt like I was there throughout the novel. The narrator was phenomal! bravo!!
