About this listen

Winner of the Polari Book Prize 2020

Shortlisted for the Bollinger Everyman Wodehouse Prize 2019

Until recently, Julia hadn’t had sex in three years.

But now:

  • a one-night stand is accusing her of breaking his penis;
  • a sexually confident lesbian is making eyes at her over confrontational modern art;
  • and she’s wondering whether trimming her pubes makes her a bad feminist.

Julia’s about to learn that she’s been looking for love - and satisfaction - in all the wrong places....

Frank, filthy and very, very funny, In at the Deep End is a brilliant debut from a major new talent.

Critic reviews

"Frank, funny and fabulously filthy, but also tender and moving. Every woman should own a copy of this book." (Erin Kelly, author of He Said/She Said)

"Brilliant! The best thing I’ve read in ages. I can’t remember the last time a book made me laugh so hard, while also making me think about life, relationships and what makes us who we are." (Gill Sims, author of Why Mummy Drinks)

"Utterly original, hilarious." (Francesca Simon, The Times)

Really Enjoyable.

It starts off absolutely hilarious and then touches into deeper subjects on relationships. Part of me was screaming at the main character throughout because of her decisions but it makes sense for the story. Definitely worth the read/listen.

Brilliant story brought to life by the excellent narrator

This was a random pick from a recent Audible sale, but wow, so glad I came across it (NPI).
Funny, warm, and enlightening, this story was like being taken into another world by an old dear friend. Guess you have to be open-minded to appreciate all of the detail, but in this day and age, that should be the majority anyway!
Lucy Briggs-Owen was EXCELLENT and I hope to find more from her. Best narration I’ve heard, what a talent!

Great story with excellent narration

Narration was amazing and really brought the story to life. Not sure if I'd have enjoyed this as much if it was a physical read, but having it voiced really drew me in.

Superbly written and read

I dont want to say too much about the story, it's well told and so perfectly written that it would be wrong to try to summarise it. also if I'd been more aware of the detail of the topic I might not have read it. I was on the edge of my seat and felt my whole being tense up at times reading this.

Also the reader gave brilliant characterisation and I think I can say read better than anyone I have recently heard.

This book is brilliant and feels really honest

Okay

Thought this would be a funny, filthy, light hearted listen as the reviews were good. Showed promise at the beginning but then just became tedious. Ploughed on thinking it would pick up again but Just got sillier.

Bridget Jones goes hardcore

This is a great listen, a bit like Bridget Jones’s Diary but with some delightful fisting thrown in.
I was captivated by the narrator who portrayed the characters beautifully and her voicing of Sam is a work of art in itself.
While it is deliciously graphic in places, the wonderful narration and believable characters make it a pleasure, rather than a squirm, to listen to.
The main relationship is astonishingly well portrayed – an astutely observed and cleverly constructed power struggle that is both subtle and realistic.
This book made me smile throughout and it was a real pleasure to listen to.
I’m smiling now just thinking about it.
