Summary

The First World War was the defining event of the last century. It claimed the lives of more than 16 million people across the globe and had an enormous impact on all who experienced it. No nation in Europe was left untouched, and even neutral states felt its devastating impact.

Yet it was the ordinary men and women who were affected the most.

This gripping, revealing and poignant collection of stories tells the First World War from the perspective of those who were there, using letters, diaries and memoirs from Imperial War Museum's unparalleled archives.

Unabashed honesty

Never wrote a review before this, I just had to comment on the seemingly matter of fact honesty which came through in every story. When reading this book you are taken back to a place in time where the most horrendous events are taking place. Yet the way in which people selflessly cared about others and thought about others before themselves, even if terrified beyond imagination, is humbling.

Fascinating

This production by the IWM is a excellent insight into the many aspects of life during the Great War, for a variety of people. I greatly enjoyed the book, no doubt I will listen again. It was especially pleasingly that you were told what these different people did following the end of the War. I will look for more books by this author.

Really interesting first hand accounts

Really interesting first hand accounts of WW1 seom start to finish. I wish it had been longer and found the awful attempt of an Irish accent towards the end to be irritating. All in I'd recommend this for a listen.

Wonderful

How can a book about the horror of the First World War be wonderful but it is. So many stories and sacrifices given in the name of freedom. The chapter about the Somme was heart wrenching. So well narrated.

The people who left behind their stories should be heard by all.
