Story
Devon Douglas can’t believe it when she comes face-to-face with Sadie again. They were inseparable in high school until Devon did something she ruined their friendship on a lovestruck whim. Sadie is as dazzling as Devon remembers—and she can still hold her own surfing the wild waves of Clearwater Bay. Devon’s first priority is her five-year-old son, but getting to know Sadie all over again is taking up more and more of her headspace. Sadie is inexplicably drawn to Devon. It could be nostalgia. Or remnants of their old friendship flaring. But what if it’s more than that?

Story
As an anthropologist, Holly McCartney is more comfortable in a museum than shopping on Rodeo Drive. She isn't prepared for the media frenzy on her arrival in L.A. to accept a posthumous acting award for her late sister...or for her sister's gorgeous friend Nate Devlin to come to her rescue. Though he resents her for some reason, she can't fight their irresistible chemistry - especially when the paparazzi force her to stay at his mansion.
Summary
From a young age, Cobie Galloway made a career of playing the girl-next-door on the silver screen. Only, she's not a teenager anymore. Ready to challenge herself artistically and earn the part she's always dreamed of, she's forced to face the realization that in order to win the roles afforded to edgier actresses, she might first have to audition by playing someone edgier in her day-to-day life.
Pop star Lila Wilder built a multimedia empire by always having her finger on the pulse of what's hot. However, as she struggles to produce her next smash hit record, she's finding it hard to keep her name in the public eye, and a string of tumultuous relationships with Hollywood boy toys no longer captivates anyone's attention.
Both women tentatively agree to a headline-grabbing fauxmance, with two simple rules: Always stick to the script, and never forget that on the stage of public perception, nothing is real. Can two women find love in a world of carefully crafted illusions, or will a successful charade mean the potential for something more gets left on the cutting-room floor?

Great book, uneven reading performance
The reader spoiled this for me, the voice she chose for lila was awful...to my ears. This writer is great, and I think this story was also good, but the reader made it hard to tell... Such a shame. The sample didn't really reveal this, or I wasn't focusing when I heard it... Not sure which.

I was predisposed to hating one character
I often enjoy the alt celebrity romance, especially because it usually involves people needing to overcome their own need for vanity in order to gain happyness
I also, however, have a certain prejudice against people like the pop star. I get that she has a past, but so does everyone. I get that her intense drive to be a celebrity instead of an artist is rooted in a need to protect herself but it still gets to me. nothing good came from clinging to vanity and pride.
Even with all that, I did end up really enjoying the story. I think that's mostly to do with the actress who is who I secretly wish my celebrity crushes are in real life. Just in the industry to be an artist and down to earth.
The narrator did fine for the most part. But her voice for the singer was just annoying, high pitched, like Bernadette from The Big Bang Theory but constant.

A Crackling Drama about Love and Social Media
Highly recommended. The wonderful narration by Ms. Etter keeps the action moving.
The premise is droll - two women entertainers accept their scheming managers plan to have them stage a wild public relations campaign: the two will live together VERY publicly while attracting as much media attention as possible. The (straight) cynical pop music star is creating her latest album; the (lesbian) actress wants to crash her teen ingenue image to fight for a dramatic role she feels only she can bring to life.
The opening sequence with the managers is high-level farce, but the story opens up as the two women examine how this live-action drama fits self-interest and self-awareness. Two women who barely know each other discover even a penthouse can provide insufficient personal space. And both carry baggage from previous, less public, relationships.
Along the way there are warm moments and huge arguments, a lot of female-empowerment and a few side trips regarding celebrity and its coverage in new media, ageism, heterosexism, the horror of conversion therapy and one ringing soliloquy about the value of books. Hear hear!
A very good story. It would make a terrific movie, but I won't hold my breath. DR. .

Grab a comfortable spot for this one.
This was enjoyable. What does one get when they pass off a faux-relationship between a well-renown musician and movie star trying to write the next great hit and change their own-screen image respectively? An affair that becomes the talk of the town, but what's real and what not? Lila and Cobie will have to figure that for themselves but that'll be hard to do when it's all a rouse to begin with.

Captivating story
Very dramatic story that kept me riveted to my headphones listening to this drama unfold between Lila and Colby. The storyline was unusual and highly interesting and captured my imagination, it brought the characters to life, I could actually see Lila at times interacting with Colby. That is the ultimate sign of a good writer as well as a good story teller. Needless to say this book has become if not my favorite, then one of my top five favorites of all times. Thank you for sharing this with me/us.

Not bad, Another narrator could have elevated it
I’m a sucker for a good lesbian celebrity fauxmance, and I quite enjoyed this one when I first read it on Kindle. It’s sexy and at times funny, with good character development. I was excited to see it had an audio version. In a perfect world, Lori Prince would have narrated. This book is right in her wheelhouse (she absolutely slayed Fiona Riley’s “Media Darling,” which has many similarities to “In Development”). But I have to say, I really (really!) liked the voice this narrator used for Cobie. It’s appropriately throaty, even sexy. However, I agree with the several other reviews that mention the voice she used for Lila. It’s very Miss Piggy. I don’t think I’ve ever heard a narrator use a voice like it outside of a children’s book. Most of the time I could ignore it but at times it was extremely pitchy (particularly during the argument scenes). This was true of some of her other character voices as well. Other than that she truly wasn’t a bad narrator; just maybe not the 100% best fit for this story.
