Summary

From the globally best-selling author of Cast Iron, Coffin Road and The Blackhouse, an explosive new thriller set in the Outer Hebrides.

Husband and wife Niamh and Ruairidh Macfarlane co-own Ranish Tweed: a Hebridean company that weaves its own special variety of Harris cloth, which has become a sought-after brand in the world of high fashion. But when Niamh learns of Ruairidh's affair with Russian designer Irina Vetrov, then witnesses the pair killed by a car bomb in Paris, her life is left in ruins.

Along with her husband's remains, she returns home to the Isle of Lewis bereft. The Paris police have ruled out terrorism and ruled in murder - making Niamh the prime suspect, along with Irina's missing husband, Georgy. And so French Detective Sylvie Braque is sent to the island to look into Niamh's past, unaware of the dangers that await her.

As Braque digs deeper into the couple's history, Niamh herself replays her life with Ruiairidh, searching her memory for those whose grievances might have led to murder. And with each layer revealed and every unexpected twist uncovered, the two women find themselves drawn inexorably closer to a killer who will not turn back.

gripping story, well read and engaging

As with all of Peter May's other Hebridean stories I enjoyed this one. Perhaps not as good as Black House, Lewis Man or Coffin Road but good and gripping all the same. This is my first audio book and I may well be converted!

Didn't see that coming!

1st Peter May novel - just off to find more as I enjoyed thus one very much.

Loved the female narration and kept hoping she would be back as each new chapter began.... but sadly the male one less so - expressionless and tedious! A lost opportunity when the writing deserved so much more.....

Suspend belief

A rather far-fetched story with lots of red herrings. The fashion industry is portrayed as very unpleasant. Excellent descriptions of the island as always. However we still wanted to know who's done it!!

Good but predictable.

It was a good listen and I enjoyed all of the references to Scotland, but I found it to be very predictable.

Very disappointing

I am a big fan of Peter May books. But this one is just so disappointing. The wonderful descriptive narrative in many of his books, this time has become repetitive, tedious and drawn out in an indulgent manner. This is coupled with a far fetched, disjointed and ultimately totally unbelievable story line. Avoid!

Very good

This was a good story and well told. However, I felt that it didn’t come up to the level of his other works (the original Lewis Trilogy in particular). Because of the writing style there was some repetition, which can be quite disorientating in audiobook format. It its own right this is a good book, just not as good as the other Peter May books I have listened to. If you are a fan of Peter May you will enjoy it. If this is your first Peter May book then I would suggest trying the excellent Lewis Trilogy first.

on second reading

As gripping as ever. As a tree lover I found the islands barren but after becoming a fan of Peter Mary's island tales I cannot wait to return and find that special magic he portrays.

Not one of his best

Enjoyed overall good story the narration irritates slightly moving between two but it begins to work. The ending though seemed somewhat difficult to believe.

Disappointing

Disappointing- this is the poorest crafted Peter May book I have read and I have read most of them. An interesting portrait of the Hebrides and the tweed making but too much geographical detail (listing road names and so on) to spin out the story. It was well read as ever by Peter Forbes and Anna Murray, too, has a great reading However the last chapters and the ending were bizarre and really not believable at all.
