Summary

Short-listed for the Gordon Burn Prize 2018

A masterful true crime account of the Golden State Killer - the elusive serial rapist turned murderer who terrorised California for over a decade - from Michelle McNamara, the gifted journalist who died tragically while investigating the case.

'You'll be silent forever, and I'll be gone in the dark.'

For more than 10 years, a mysterious and violent predator committed 50 sexual assaults in Northern California before moving south, where he perpetrated 10 sadistic murders. Then he disappeared, eluding capture by multiple police forces and some of the best detectives in the area.

Three decades later, Michelle McNamara, a true crime journalist who created the popular website True Crime Diary, was determined to find the violent psychopath she called the Golden State Killer. Michelle pored over police reports, interviewed victims, and embedded herself in the online communities that were as obsessed with the case as she was.

I'll Be Gone in the Dark - the masterpiece McNamara was writing at the time of her sudden death - offers an atmospheric snapshot of a moment in American history and a chilling account of a criminal mastermind and the wreckage he left behind. It is also a portrait of a woman's obsession and her unflagging pursuit of the truth.

Framed by an introduction by Gillian Flynn and an afterword by her husband, Patton Oswalt, the book was completed by Michelle's lead researcher and a close colleague. Utterly original and compelling, it is destined to become a true crime classic - and may at last unmask the Golden State Killer.

Good summary of GSK

I enjoyed this audiobook. I have followed the GSK for sometime now and this was a good summary. Probably a better listen for those that already have a little prior knowledge of these events.

Excellent stuff

A fascinating, detailed view of an amateur investigation (that could put professional ones to shame) beautifully read.

Excellent .

This is a fascinating book about one woman's search for a prolific serial offender, exciting, gripping, thorough and tinged with sadness as the writer didn't live long enough to finish the book. This gives an insight into how individuals work to try and solve crimes where the police have failed, doggedly chasing up every lead no matter how trivial, there are insights into the writer's life and the impact of her work on her family. It's sad that we will not see more from this writer, the best true crime book in recent years.

Great in every way

Great book, amazing detail in Michelle's investigation and it really sucks you in. Such a shame she never got to see him behind bars.

A stunning memoir

I read this book so fast and some parts of it made me cry. It's so incredibly touching and hard to read in places.

Great story, well read and engaging.

This is a chilling story well told and researched. The prose is flowing and really interesting. The story is incredible and most of all it's true. The sense of sorrow for the victims palpable as is the longing to catch this vile, evil killer. One down that knocked off a star. An update. If you need one then search evil has a name. Its equally good.

Brilliant

Couldn’t stop listening, especially knowing the alleged GSK is finally in metal bracelets, hearing the clang of metal on metal, signalling his end.

outstanding book. I would highly recommend this.

this was an amazing listen, especially as he has now been caught. It's so sad Michelle macnammara spent her life pursuing this killer and didn't see him brought to justice. But she had it figured out in the book!

Gripping

Michelle's determination to solve this case was a personal journey and this book, completed by loved ones after her passing, was difficult to hear. It is sad she did not live to see the culprit brought to justice but her work here represents a passion and morality most could only hope to achieve. A bleak insight into the darkest side of humanity.
