Summary

For fans of He Said/She Said and Anatomy of a Scandal, Penny Hancock’s I Thought I Knew You is about secrets and lies – and whose side you take when it really matters.

Who do you know better? Your oldest friend? Or your child? And who should you believe when one accuses the other of an abhorrent crime?

Jules and Holly have been best friends since university. They tell each other everything, trading revelations and confessions and sharing both the big moments and the small details of their lives: Holly is the only person who knows about Jules’ affair; Jules was there for Holly when her husband died. And their two children - just three years apart - have grown up together.

So when Jules’ daughter, Saffie, makes a rape allegation against Holly’s son, Saul, neither woman is prepared for the devastating impact this will have on their friendship or their families. Especially as Holly, in spite of her principles, refuses to believe her son is guilty.

Fantastic

To be honest I had this one in my wish list for ages and kept putting off getting it as the write up didn't sound that exciting...so glad I got it, couldn't stop listening, great characters, great narration and great title for the book as it could have applied to all of them

A slightly predictable slow-burner.

The females in the audiobook are insufferable and portrayed in the worst way possible, it took everything out of me not to scream at them as I listened.

Emotional rollercoaster of a read

Amazon describe this as "the most thought provoking and compelling read of the year." I can't disagree with that statement having read it. As far as the debate up for thought is concerned, I say yes is yes, no is no, end of. Doesn't matter how she may dress, look, act, etc, nothing happens without a given, spoken aloud, "yes." That's easy for me to say I know, as a woman, but I feel very strongly about that. On to the book itself, I really didn't like Rohen, I thought he was a sexist, nasty man. As for Jules and Holly, they both irritated me at times. Holly refused to believe it was possible, and I understand why, but she wouldn't even consider it, and some of Jules's words and actions also irritated me. She broke Saffie's confidence, and a promise she made to her daughter, and from then on in the book, I didn't warm to her at all. I don't care what or who it involves, she made a promise to her own 13 year old daughter, and she broke it. Unacceptable in my view. I think Holly and Jules should've tried to work together to resolve it, and they ended up against each other. They seemed to me more focused on their anger with the other, than helping their children. Adults were more childish than Saffie and Saul! I do have to credit Hancock for the twist at the end, I totally didn't see that coming, and having read a lot of thrillers, sometimes now I get twists right before they happen. But absolutely not this time. Brilliant! I did take one side from the start, and stuck with my convictions, so I was proved right on that, but the twist totally got me. I felt very sorry indeed for both Saffie and Saul. I believe they both suffered in very different ways as a result of what happened. The adults I didn't sympathise with at all. I actually at times thought Saffie and Saul who were actually going through the horror of a situation such as this, were dealing with it in a more mature way than the adults who were supposed to protect them! Very good read all in all, I would recommend this to anyone who loves Psychological suspense.

Absolutely brilliant!

A great read with a compelling story-line. Quite a few twists and turns on the the way and I was mostly kept guessing as to what would happen next. I particularly enjoyed Laura Kirman's narration too - one of the best audiobooks I've listened to. The descriptions of the local landscape were brilliant - I know the area well and the book gave an excellent sense of the place - in addition to the characters and story.

Disappointing.

I really didn’t like this book. I couldn’t get away from the fact that I felt like I was being read a story to. I did not like the narration.
Sadly the characters are lifeless and I really didn’t care what happened to any of them.
I also found the repeated tautology extremely irritating. For example: “it gave her a sick feeling in her stomach to see him....she felt a mixture of emotions bubble through her, rage and upset, and indignation and bewilderment...”.
I managed to get to Chapter 4 and then gave up and skipped to the end to find out who the guilty party was.
Maybe it’s me but I expect more from a professional author.

Narrator put me off

This is a potentially gripping story with a thought provoking subject. BUT the characters are very unlikable and I find it hard to believe that Holly as a university tutor can be so thick at times! And the narrator irritated me by pronouncing several words wrong, putting the emphasis in the wrong place, and most of all by giving the supposedly Polish Jules a Welsh accent...

It was a treat to read this book

Thought provoking, trust and faith stretched to capacity. Loved the diverse characters, each brought to life with excellent narrator skills. No matter how long your list books to read, add this one and find the time to enjoy. 5 stars

Excellent!

This is a very enjoyable audiobook, great story and excellent narration. The characters are all well developed and it was easy to care about each of them. I found it quite compelling and got through it quickly.

good performance. Story was very good up to about three quarters through but felt the ending could have been better-felt slightly disappointed at the end

Outstanding

I loved this talking book.It was a clever story, but it was the dialogue and the inner reflections of the main character that were so engaging and so believable. It brought up so many interesting subjects, such as the nature of friendship, our relationship with our children, and the impossible task of being a parent. The reader was excellent. She had a beautiful voice which was easy to listen to and her differentiation of the various characters was skilfully managed.
