Summary

A terrifying ghost story from the Queen of Icelandic crime, Yrsa Sigurdardottir, author of the Thora Gudmundsdottir novels.

The crunching noise had resumed, now accompanied by a disgusting, indefinable smell. It could best be described as a blend of kelp and rotten meat. The voice spoke again, now slightly louder and clearer: Don't go. Don't go yet. I'm not finished.

In an isolated village in the Icelandic Westfjords, three friends set to work renovating a derelict house. But soon they realise they are not alone there - something wants them to leave, and it's making its presence felt. Meanwhile, in a town across the fjord, a young doctor investigating the suicide of an elderly woman discovers that she was obsessed with his vanished son. When the two stories collide, the terrifying truth is uncovered....

Be ready for the edge of your seat!

This story is so well intertwined with a myriad of twists and turns; never a dull moment.

The only criticism I may make would be that it would have been nice for the narration to be in an Icelandic accent.

Really creepy.

Great creepy tale interweaving 2 stories. Lots of twists and turns and some really skin crawling horror.
There is nothing more lovely than the laughter of a child... Unless you are alone in a house...

Amazing!

Really loved listening to this book, Lucy Paterson is a fantastic narrator and really brought to life all the characters. The book is really enjoyable and kept me listening daily. It actually freaked me out a little and I loved the ending!

Disturbing but interesting

I liked this. Not too scary but perplexing. Kept you guessing about all the connections. Wrapped up pretty well at the end but I did have a few questions related to how, what abs why?

Nice and creepy

Well constructed story read fluently. The author creates a suitably claustrophobic atmosphere on the island and an intriguing story off it. Some plot twists were telegraphed too soon but overall a satisfying listen convincingly narrated.

Spooky thriller set against a stunning landscape

This is the first thriller I’ve ever read and it had me on the edge of my seat and unable to listen to it at night because I found it so spooky! Great story telling, beautiful descriptions of a beautiful country. I loved the way the two stories came together at the end - caught me by surprise. I’ll definitely look out for more English translations by this author.

Can't get enough of this author

I have read the Freya series, am halfway through Thora and getting through all stand alone novels. Yrsa Sigurdadottir pens terrific tales, steeped in Icelandic culture, daily life and environment. Translation is excellent and narrators give a lilting life to events and pronunciation. Extremely enjoyable.
