About this listen

A secluded mountain lodge. The perfect getaway. So remote no one will ever find you.

The promise of a luxury vacation at a secluded wilderness spa has brought together eight lucky guests. But nothing is what they were led to believe. As a fierce storm barrels down and all contact with the outside is cut off, the guests fear that it’s not a getaway. It’s a trap.

Each one has a secret. Each one has something to hide. And now, as darkness closes in, they all have something to fear - including one another.

Alerted to the vanished party of strangers, homicide cop Mason Deniaud and search and rescue expert Callie Sutton must brave the brutal elements of the mountains to find them. But even Mason and Callie have no idea how precious time is. Because the clock is ticking, and one by one, the guests of Forest Shadow Lodge are being hunted. For them, surviving becomes part of a diabolical game.

Listen at 1.1x speed to avoid narration irritation

I'd read this on Kindle, and really enjoyed the Agatha Christie 'And Then There Were None' plot, set in the Canadian wilderness. The book jumps back and forth in time and character, giving us the viewpoints from then and now, and from the group in the wilderness and those searching for them later. I liked the characters of Callie and Mason (search party) - nice building of their relationship. All those on the island were completely un-likeable, which is as it should be given the backstories that emerge. Not all is as it seems, and there is some decent sleight of hand and plot twists to keep the storyline trotting along nicely. This led me to read many more of the author's thrillers - very enjoyable.

And I am glad I read before I listened. Sadly, this performer was not at all well suited to this book. Bad enough were the dreadful attempts at accents (Norwegian - laughable; and goodness knows what Nathan's accent was supposed to be.... maybe British?). But the snail-like speed overall, plus the weird pronunciation of some words drove me to distraction. I belatedly read another review which talked about trying an advanced speed - re-listening at 1.1x (or maybe even 1.2) markedly improved the experience, and I wish I'd thought of this much earlier.

So - read it for the story, and grit your teeth for the performance.

Great story!

I totally enjoyed this story. An intriguing plot line and interesting characters. I enjoyed the narration - yes the Norwegian accent was not the best but the way the characters brought to life was very good.

Ok story

OK story but thought it was longer than it needed to be and also quite repetitive in some places. Narrator spoke very slowly.
