Summary

Your past and your family can haunt you like nothing else… A hilarious and terrifying new novel from the New York Times bestselling author of The Final Girl Support Group.

Every childhood home is haunted, and each of us are possessed by our parents.

When their parents die at the tail end of the coronavirus pandemic, Louise and Mark Joyner are devastated but nothing can prepare them for how bad things are about to get. The two siblings are almost totally estranged, and couldn't be more different. Now, however, they don't have a choice but to get along. The virus has passed, and both of them are facing bank accounts ravaged by the economic meltdown. Their one asset? Their childhood home. They need to get it on the market as soon as possible because they need the money. Yet before her parents died they taped newspaper over the mirrors and nailed shut the attic door.

Sometimes we feel like puppets, controlled by our upbringing and our genes. Sometimes we feel like our parents treat us like toys, or playthings, or even dolls. The past can ground us, teach us, and keep us safe. It can also trap us, and bind us, and suffocate the life out of us. As disturbing events stack up in the house, Louise and Mark have to learn that sometimes the only way to break away from the past, sometimes the only way to sell a haunted house, is to burn it all down.

Wasn't for me

After seeing good reviews I thought I would give it a listen. The storyline for me wasn't that great and found the narrator quite irritating, especially when putting the child and puppets voice on, then screaming to inpersonate the child, Pulled my headphones out several times as the sound irritated me.

Fantastically written it gave me nightmares. The imagary was perfect that I could see the whole story playing as if it were a horror film

Good spooky fun

I really enjoyed the family dynamics in this - how miscommunication, secrets and lies can destroy relationships. The puppets were a good vehicle for expressing the pain of death and grief. Well thought out, interesting and very good fun.

Great as always

Grady Hendrix books just seem made for audio. I love the narrators, and I love the mix of contemporary with folkloric horror. This one is good fun as usual, and the villain is particularly creepy. Enjoy.

Goosebumps for adults

Easy listening horror story with a couple of effective moments here and there - some annoyances with the writing, Hendrix needs to lay off the dialogue tags a bit.

First audiobook

This was so good the story had lots of twist and turns and was exhilarating at times. Definitely spoopy so if that’s not your thing then don’t listen.
The narrator was brilliant, I wasn’t sure I’d like an audiobook but I’m hooked now.

Faintly ridiculous

Am left slightly baffled by the glowing reviews I've read for this. It's written well enough and the first half builds up quite nicely, if slowly, but then it all just gets a bit silly and teen horror. I always deliberately avoid reading too much into the plot of 'horror' books as I think it can ruin the surprise a bit and make them predictable, so I wasn't 100% sure where the story was going until it happened. It got daft very quickly and I felt my interest start to wane. The last 5-6 hours ended up feeling like a slog and I was keen to get it over with.

The narrator is pretty good – though the chapter and a bit where it switches to a (less good) male narrator is jarring and just seemed weird and out of place.
