About this listen
Set in Colonial New England, Slewfoot is a tale of magic and mystery, of triumph and terror as only dark fantasist Brom can tell it.
Connecticut, 1666.
An ancient spirit awakens in a dark wood. The wildfolk call him Father, slayer, protector.
The colonists call him Slewfoot, demon, devil.
To Abitha, a recently widowed outcast, alone and vulnerable in her pious village, he is the only one she can turn to for help.
Together, they ignite a battle between pagan and Puritan - one that threatens to destroy the entire village, leaving nothing but ashes and bloodshed in their wake.
“If it is a devil you seek, then it is a devil you shall have!”

"Which is worse? The Devil of the forest or the terror of Puritan village rumors, accusations, and lies? At the crossroads of victimhood and vengeance, Abitha makes her choice - and blood follows." (Richard Kadrey, New York Times best-selling author of the Sandman Slim series)
"I loved this book. A roaring, bloody, beautiful work of pure imagination." (Andy Davidson, author of The Boatman's Daughter)
"Punctuated by moments of unanticipated levity as well as unmitigated terror, this clever and imaginative tale is not to be missed by fans of dark fantasy and historical horror." (Library Journal)

Fantastically Dark
Couldn't put it down. Dark as all Brom's work, however there were patches of dazzling brightness too.

Engaging pagan folk horror
I gave this book a try after seeing it mentioned in folk horror fiction lists, and I'm glad I did. I enjoyed the setting and the story, and the slow tension was really great at points. I liked how strange it was, and the horror was great. I also enjoyed the progression of the characters, and the magical pagan elements.
I was on holiday when I listened to this so got through it quite quickly, but it is very long, probably longer than necessary. Parts started to feel very repeative as it progressed, and Samson's constant soul seeking and repetition of "no, noo!" got tiresome.
Part of this annoyance was from the narrator, that overall does a good job but her English accents were quite grating at points, especially with certain words. Abitha sounded almost Australian at times which wasn't great. This is a nitpick, but again, it's a very long audiobook it was quite noticeable! This could just be a Brits perspective though, overall it really was good.
I did enjoy this and would recommend it, especially if you like witchy woodsy folk magic kind of stories.

Great book
Narrated very well, story good, wish there was more. Hated it coming to an end. Wasn't scary but there was some suspenseful moments ***spoiler*** Wish the husband had more of a role for a bit longer but still very good.
