Summary

With nothing but the clothes on his back - and something horrific snapping at his heels - Jack Winter fled his rural Georgia home when he was just a boy. Watching the world he knew vanish in a trucker’s rearview mirror, he thought he was leaving an unspeakable nightmare behind forever.

Now, years later, the bright new future he’s built suddenly turns pitch black, as something fiendishly familiar looms dead ahead.

Surviving a violent car crash seems like a miracle for Jack’s family, but Jack knows there’s nothing divine about it. The profound evil he uncovered as a boy has finally found him again. The thing that crouched at his bedside with soulless eyes and grinning, razor-sharp teeth is back with plans for Jack and his angelic youngest daughter, and a chilling promise: I’ve always been here, and I’ll never leave.

4.5 Stars! Eerie and gripping.

Though it's a bit short, which was my only gripe with the book, I thought this was a great listen. It's an eerie experience that leaves you wanting more.

I smashed this out in a day, but it's definitely worth the credit. Great characters, great story, great book. Give it a listen.

Well narrated but predictable

I enjoyed this and until the last hour it kept me hooked but as the ending unravelled I predicted what would happen- still a good listen though

Creepy and disturbing

Really enjoyed this story, felt very sinister at times! My only gripe about it is that I wish it had been longer so I could have enjoyed it more.

*CONTENT SPOILER*
There are some moments that may distress the reader of gore and animal cruelty that I believe would be hard for some listeners to get through

Great story!

Really good tale, packed with so much. Horror, fear, dread, suspense, and wow, what an ending.

I absolutely loved the narration, though chapter 1 seemed sped up, I thought I'd accidentally increased the speed. Other than that, the narrator was fantastic. Will definitely be checking out more from this author.

So scary

Love this book. Like all of Ania’s books, it frightens the life out of you and then breaks your heart. Wish I good read it for the first time again.

A story without hope is a hopeless story

well written and well performed but….

I love horror stories and this one had the potential to be great. Yet, as a father of 2, I struggled with both the content and lack of any sense of redemption or positive outcome.

It is literally a tale of unstoppable evil in which no forces of good or god exist to counter it

Well-read and performed but predictable.

This was an enjoyable listen up until the final act, where we got very few answers and a very predictable ending.

Predictable but Enjoyable

This is the second story I've pursued by the same author, this too seems to have the same theme where the main protaginist gets to third act before the reader gets to discover their sordid past... The narator seems to speed through the text so knock the speed down for a more enjoyable listen.

THE DIRTY SOUTH

DO YOU BELIEVE THERE CAN BE A DEVIL, IF THERE'S NO GOD?
I thought I was going to get a good horror story with some good character building. I got the character building, but by the time Ania got around to trying to be scary, I was bored and it was too little tooooo late. Had this been a longer book, I would have quit half way through, but since it was a little over six hours, I stuck it out. I felt like my patience was not rewarded. The story had all the elements to be scary, but was never fully fleshed out. It had potential and Ania can write, it just never got there. I recently gave King five stars for Cujo and I gave five stars to DiLouie for Suffer The Children. Seed needs to be reworked.

6 hours I can't get back. (Spoilers)

Disappointed in myself for even wasting the time to finish this. Tedious. Saw the ending coming a mile away. Spoiler: Skip if you're an animal lover. Completely sick of books using killing animals as a so called plot line. It's disgusting and poor, cliched writing. "Oooh it's a horror novel, can't forget the dead pets to emphasize my story."

Scared me so bad I had to turn it off!

My rule is to only listen to books in the car or at the gym. I broke my own rules for this book. I was listening to it while soaking in my bathtub and I had to turn it off, because I got so scared. I sent my Doberman into the living room to "go see" because I was afraid something was out there. This book is scary. I had to finish listening to it at the office. :-)

Starts out slow-ends with a BANG

This book really creeps up on the listener. Eric Dove's mild voice puts interest into the story as he details a typical family..some dissent due to not enough money and his band, two sweet little girls an interfering mother-in-law, a husband who can't really remember his youth and a wife who holds it all together.

At about 4 hours we start to get some of the history and as this short audiobook continues even more of the backstory on Jack is divulged.... and then horror comes out.

I listened to it one evening and wished I hadn't.

A good audiobook for fans of Stephen King in his early days.

heavy !!

I really enjoyed this book. Mostly because you can't see what's coming. Just when you think you know what's going to happen or how it will end. Ania surprises you. Well done. I will read all your books.

One Long Horror Cliché

Narrator Eric Dove does what he can with this short novel but even with his excellent reading, and at a mere 6 hours, I found it tedious. The premise plays out as predictably as a bad B-movie, with few surprises and many familiar tropes. The writing is fine, the reading is excellent but the story itself left a lot to be desired, at least for me. Seed was a disappointment.

A Good Story, Just Not For Me.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

First of all I want to say this: This is an excellent story. It is well crafted, excellently performed, and cohesive. That being said, I did not like it. This is NOT a slur against Ania Ahlborn-- in fact I would like to check out more of her work. I did not like this story simply because I do not enjoy stories with this kind of ending. The ending worked perfectly well here, I just would have wished for a different type. That being said, I would recommend this, just with a caveat of what kind of ending to expect. I won't listen to/ read this again, but that's simply because of my personal taste, not a reflection on the story itself.

Would you recommend Seed to your friends? Why or why not?

Yes, but again I would warn them of the over all tone. I think had I had some glimmer-- not a full on spoiler, mind-- I would have enjoyed this more.

What about Eric G. Dove’s performance did you like?

All of it. Nothing ever rang untrue or discordant. Bad narration can ruin a reading, and this was never an issue here.

Was Seed worth the listening time?

Yes and no. As I said above, I didn't enjoy it. But I don't consider it a waste of time-- I just consider it like sampling a food and discovering you dislike it. The journey was worth it, even if, for me, the end was not.

Any additional comments?

I'm curious to try other examples of Ania Ahlborn's work, but I'll probably check a few out from the library before hand.

Decent

2.5 Stars for the book

If the Author was both more seasoned as a writer and a little more daring in her plot choices this would have been a better book.
As it stands I found parts of this book, particularly the revelations of the past to be a bit unpolished. It was like the author needed to fit in this stuff but did not have the skill to make it flow better.
Add to this the parts that feel like they were ripped straight from a horror movie with out any original spin on it by the author made this a book while a bit disappointing was a decent light read but nothing more then that.

3 stars for the narration by Eric G. Dove

At first I felt that the narrator was reading the book to fast but once the book got it's rhythm so did the narrator and became easier to follow. The voices he used for the variety of characters was good for the male voices but I did not like the female voices.I also liked how Eric G. Dove's southern accent was a good fit for this book and added to my enjoyment of this novel.

Not for the faint hearted. Very intense horror.

Where does Seed rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Great story, but a lot of it stays with you and is hard to forget. I would rank it upper middle.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Seed?

The ending. Enough said.

What about Eric G. Dove’s performance did you like?

He did children and adults voices credible. I wouldn't say he is the best of narrators, but he did help the story rather than distract.
The only problem I had was his calling baloney, bologna. I know no one who eats a bologna sandwich but plenty that eat baloney.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

What is, will be again.

Any additional comments?

There is a lot of things going on in this book that people will hate. I hated some of it. If you like horror, than this is about the most horrible book there could be.
Not all endings are happy.

I kept reading this book hoping it would redeem itself. What a waste of my time. I would have given this book "0" stars if possible. Don't waste your money or time!!!!!!
