Summary

A heartwarming story of friendship and demonic possession.

The year is 1988. High school sophomores Abby and Gretchen have been best friends since the fourth grade. But after an evening of skinny-dipping goes disastrously wrong, Gretchen begins to act...different. She's moody. She's irritable. And bizarre incidents keep happening whenever she's nearby.

Abby's investigation leads her to some startling discoveries - and by the time their story reaches its terrifying conclusion, the fate of Abby and Gretchen will be determined by a single question: Is their friendship powerful enough to beat the devil?

Like an unholy hybrid of Beaches and The Exorcist, My Best Friend's Exorcism blends teen angst, adolescent drama, unspeakable horrors, and a mix of '80s pop songs into a pulse-pounding supernatural thriller.

Too long story

The exorcism story came only close to the end. There was no need to go through the childhood elongated story, it only made it boring. The performance got exaggerated sometimes.

The exorcist set in the 80s

If you love 80s nostalgia, you’ll love this.
Easy listening and nothing too scary until the actual exorcism.
The same as most exorcism stories but with high school and 80s vibes.

One sitting listen, a brilliant genre mish mash 5*

The Goonies meets The Breakfast Club meets The Exorcist and Exorcism of Emily Rose.
Loved it!

uhhh

story is a bit of a slow burner, you only hear about the exorcism in like the last hour
the narrator was a bit cringe in parts and ruined it a bit for me
if i was a teen i probably would of liked this more

Great story and a great reading

Draws you in and lets you get to know the characters, then turns surprisingly dark.

Fun Ride

Don't go into this with The Exorcist in your mind. Comparing the two wouldn't be fair because demonic possession is where the similarities begin and end. The tale of friendship and found family and love is one that bolsters the horror. Characters are richly drawn and grow on you easily. I laughed out loud, gasped in terror, and winced in agony. So much fun.

Fun story, terrible narrator

If you like dark humour, creepy set ups and lots of retro kitsch then this is the book for you! The only thing letting it down is the very poor narrator. I think it needed a much smarter, savvier and subtle reader.

Superb narration for a so so story

This will greatly appeal to 80's nostalgia freaks but will have less to offer hardcore horror fans. The story is very well told by Emily Woo Zeller.

Not what I was expecting, still very enjoyable

I think this fits into young adult horror perhaps.

I don't want to leave spoilers so I'll just say that I enjoyed the main characters so much that by the time the book started to become horror (and it takes a while) I kinda didn't want it to.

That's high praise for character development, but it made for a bit of an uneven listening experience.

Still recommended 100% while it's in the free books.
