Summary

The first thing I learned at vet school was to always expect the unexpected.

Well, I sure never saw Santiago Torres or his adorable Great Dane coming.

Santi is everything I’m not. Tall, confident, overbearing, and if I’m to believe his advances, he’s also very experienced in...well, you know what.

I always play safe, but it’s time to ditch the V-card. We couldn’t be more different, but that doesn’t matter, because this is just a one-time thing.

I’m not going to want more, right?

I’m not going to fall for him, right?

How to Catch a Vet is the sixth book in the Chester Falls series and features an opposites attract story between a virgin and a player, a Great Dane with a tendency to rescue—read: kidnap—other people’s pets, and a small town like no other.

Delightful!

Micah and Santi are so sweet and funny together! Both dealing with a lot, they can any more deny their attraction to each other than they can resist getting closer. Telling themselves they are being good friends is how they fool themselves into giving up…
A menagerie of slightly crazy animals and a solid group of friends and family manage to finally do the trick and get them together.
Entertaining, heartwarming, funny, sweet and a bit naughty, this book is everything I’ve come to love about this wonderful series!

Another fantastic audio in the series!

Loved Santi and Micah’s story. Both men have their things that make them feel like they’re not worthy of being loved and I loved how their relationship developed. I also loved the menagerie of animals!!!
Ana Ashley writes such heartwarming and beautiful stories - and Nick Hudson does an amazing job and bringing them further to life. Yet another fantastic listen.

Terrific narration for an enjoyable story

How to Catch a Vet is the sixth book in Ana Ashley’s diverting Chester Falls series. Each book spins out a charming small-town romance featuring endearing characters and interesting, often surprising, couples. How to Catch a Vet is no exception.

Santiago Torres, brother of Luca and BFF of Ryan from How to Catch the Boss, has returned to his hometown of Chester Falls after being discharged from the military due to a devastating health diagnosis. His life has been upended. He’s reeling from the abrupt end of his military career. But even moreso, he’s grieving over the loss of his independence and plans for the future.

Micah Sawyer has also returned to Chester Falls to take over his grandfather’s veterinary practice. Micah’s shy and awkward, at least with people. With animals, he’s in his element, confident and at ease. Due to a confluence of events in high school, Micah became the target of bullying due to his weight and sexuality. Ostracized by his peers, he folded in on himself and tried to become invisible. He determinedly focused on his studies and his infrequent attempts at dating sputtered out. Almost a decade later, Micah is still a virgin and his self-deprecation over that fact, as well as his appearance, remains strong.

Santi and Micah make an improbable match, but they absolutely work as a couple. Complete opposites on the outside but kindred spirits on the inside. Ms. Ashley doesn’t allow this romance to fall into trope predictability because she adds dimension and depth to Santi and Micah’s relationship. She creates a lovely dynamic between them, with each needing something that the other unreservedly supplies.

She also uses Santi and Micah’s relationship to weave an important message through the story. Appearance doesn’t matter. People should be judged by who they are, not what they look like. Happiness comes from accepting yourself and your limitations, rejoicing in the things that make you unique and special, and believing in your core that you are worthy of love. Santi’s physical limitations specifically underline this point.
Ms. Ashley also injects into the story some external conflict with Micah’s high school bullies, likely to further enhance this message. She didn’t need it, though, to convey her point. Perhaps Ms. Ashley belatedly realized this, because that thread was resolved abruptly in an unconvincing way. In my view, it ultimately detracted from the story she wanted to tell, rather than enhanced it.

On the flip side, though, Ms. Ashley surrounds Santi and Micah with a crazy crew of adorable, charismatic animals which provides a very welcome and appreciated addition to the story. Santi’s continual, unintentional adoption of animals that his Great Dane brings home is as improbable as it is hysterical. But overwhelmingly, it provides a heartwarming lightness to the story that balances out the seriousness of Micah and Santi’s personal troubles.
I would be remiss if I didn’t note Ms. Ashley’s clever twist to the title of How to Catch a Vet. This time the catching goes both ways with Micah the vet catching the attention, affection and love of Santi the vet. Or maybe it’s Santi the vet catching the attention, affection and love of Micah. Either way, it works.

Nick Hudson does his usual stellar job of narrating. He breathes life into these characters and the emotion he packs into the words is phenomenal. The diction is precise, you understand every word he says, and the audio as a whole is pristine - no errors at all. When Nick Hudson is narrating, you know it will be even better than just words on the page, and that is absolutely true here.

Overall, How to Catch a Vet provides an easy, sweet read with endearing characters and some seriously adorable pets. The story is low on angst, and while it’s also low on steam, it’s high on found family and imparting its characters, and animals, with a feeling of belonging.

Wonderful opposites attract romance

The story :

These two very likeable main characters immediately settled into my heart and now refuse to leave.
Micah is a vet who has no self confidence which is mainly due to his body issues, likes to play it safe and is a virgin. Santi is a military vet and circumstances lead him back home to Chester Falls. He has also never been in a relationship but that’s because he’s a very confident, experienced player.
Their paths crossed earlier in life but reconnect due to Santi’s Great Dane. The chemistry between these two main characters is always bubbling away but it does take a few kisses before they finally get on track.
So begins a very enjoyable and engaging low angst, medium heat romance with only a bit of a misunderstanding before they get their HEA.

The narration :

Nick Hudson did a wonderful narration of this book and is a perfect fit for the Chester Falls series.
The main and side characters were easy to individually identify and the tone/cadence for each character were maintained all the way through.

Love triumphs over multiple self-esteem issues!

This consistently lighthearted series is always a panacea for my more angsty novels, although I think it’s the first time we’ve encountered aggressive homophobia in the very accepting Chester Falls - I was mildly shocked! Local veterinarian Micah’s self-esteem about his extra weight means he has never felt sexually desirable and he feels ashamed to be a virgin in his late twenties. He develops strong feelings for returned military veteran Santiago (Santi), who has been discharged with progressive sight loss. While Santi likes Micah a lot, his own self-esteem issues mean he runs hot and cold, which doesn’t help Micah. So this enjoyable romance had slightly more angst than previous stories but still maintained its sense of humour and good nature (the pets are very cute), especially when the audio narrator is the magnificent Nick Hudson, you can hear his warmth and smile and in every line.

Heartfelt romance in Chester Falls

I can't believe that we've reached the penultimate book of the Chester Falls series! There have been so many great characters to meet along with way with some hard fought for HEAs, and Micah and Santi's are just as worthwhile.
Both men see themselves as not worth having someone/being in a relationship, for their own reasons but there's no denying the attraction from when they first meet, both over the phone and in person. Santi's little growing animal menagerie needs helps and Micah, as the towns vet, is the perfect person to help the fact that Santi likes what he sees is neither here nor there. It's heartbreaking to read what they each think of themselves with Micah seeing his physique as totally off putting to others and Santi's recent diagnosis as something to be pitied but in each other they find someone to lift them up and believe in themselves.
It's a real heartwarming romance, and then Tom gets involved meaning that community spirit is on the rise as well. It's great catching up with most of the men we've met across the series at some point in the story but my absolute favourite characters are Olive (Duchess Olive McPickles), Gus and Alfie. Such a fantastic, weirdly wonderful group of animals that work so well together and are the heart of the story really.
Overall, this is yet another heartwarming romance from Ana Ashley with easily lovable men and great group of friends that jump in to support their friends at a moments notice.
Nick Hudson yet again brings a story wonderfully to life. He guarantees to bring the character's personalities out, and even the animals in this case, showcase their romance and relationship, and make it an all round enjoyable listening experience.

Such a great series

I have been invested in this series since Ana started writing it, always full of great characters which pop back up in each book. In addition, the stories are always well thought out to keep me entranced.

This book did not disappoint and had all the traits of the others. Both the main characters have depth and backstories, and it's a pleasure to listen to or read. Or both.

Well narrated by Nick Hudson, but I did have to speed up the narration to 1.25, but this is usual for me.

Sweet addition to the series

This is a so-sweet addition to the Chester Falls series, narrated by the always spectacular Nick Hudson (I honestly can't imagine anyone else doing this series!) Nick always manages to find just the right voice for every character, and infuses them with life and emotion. I loved Micah and Santiago, although Micah's insecurity from years of homophobia, bullying, and disregard, broke my heart. In spite of a successful veterinary practice and gaining Santi's love, even at the end, I wasn't sure he'd left all that behind completely. The bachelor auction with Tom as emcee was a hoot, and the ending between Santi and Micah was sweet and heart-warming.

I received a free review copy of this audiobook from the author and am voluntarily leaving this honest review.
