Critic reviews

Really practical . . . guidance on the habits you fall into that aren’t helping you achieve the success you deserve. It’s fascinating. (Lorraine Candy)
How Women Rise is a great read for any woman who wants to identify self-defeating behaviors that are holding her back, gain insight into why she engages in those behaviors, and develop skills to confidently achieve her goals. (Lois P. Frankel, author of Nice Girls Don’t Get the Corner Office)
Sally and Marshall give new meaning to the term ‘dream team’. Together they have produced a masterpiece, an over-the-moon but magnificently down-to-earth leadership book for the ages. (Tom Peters, author of In Search of Excellence)

helpful and relevant synopsis

I definitely felt like this book was speaking to me and learnt a lot however i would have loved some more case studies. esp quantitative case studies. maybe a little humour or lightness. It is however a very practical book if thats what you want

If you are serious about your career - read it!

Would you listen to How Women Rise again? Why?

I am going to listen to this book, again and again. I am also planning to share it with all my lady-clients who come to me for coaching.

What did you like best about this story?

I've just finished listening to this book, and I must say: it says it all about the position of a woman in the workplace. I highly recommend it to every lady out there, who wants to succeed and win the game.

A true eye opener

Resonates strongly and delivered with simplicity and clarity. Identied common behaviours that seem harmless which can be a big hindrance to progress.

Good tips, but still full of internalize misogyny

While there are indeed some good observations about things women often do in the workplace and tips to overcome this, the book is still ripe with sexist biases not backed by science.

I was in disbelief when they mentioned the whole "men are hunters women are gathers" as proof of why women act the way they do. This is a common myth that has been disproven for years! (Women were hunters 40-60% of the time!) And if the authors had taken even a small amount of time to do some actual research they would have found this easily. For me, this showed that the entire book is entirely based on the authors' feelings and not necessarily based on fact or reality and so I questioned how rooted the rest of the book is.

Additionally, I felt like although they gave some tips about how to deal with men's behaviour, even though they shouldn't be doing it, I feel like once again it tells US to ADJUST to men. While this might be practical, it is a short term solution and doesn't deliver on the nuances of slowly influencing this behaviour in our work culture which we should all be a part of!

Some Useful Information

There was some useful information and helpful examples, but overall, I found it hard to Liston to due to the lack in intonation in the readers voices and some parts I found quite slow at times, could be condensed and still include the relevant information. Perhaps better to read in print than listen to.

Very useful

I highly recommend this book to those women who think they are not appreciated by their managers in their office, despite of all the efforts and hard work they do and to those, who want to understand the reasons behind and are open to change their habits which may block them in their career.

Very inspiring!

This book is easily to listen to. I could relate to some of the limiting habits that were mentioned. There are also guidelines to understanding the cause with methods to correct them. Highly recommended!

Good insights on leadership roles

In 2022 there are an increasing number of books that are written for women and by women (partially true in this case). I might have partially identified with the context or the author's personality, but the amount of insight and overlap is refreshing, compared to the amount of energy I needed to input to draw personalized knowledge from male-focused books.

I liked the book. I've found myself 'guilty' of many of the 12 habits exposed. Acknowledgment is the first step in producing change. It is not a 'perfect' book, but there are perspectives that didn't cross my mind before.
