Meh

Felt more like a guide for loved ones of hoarding behaviour rather than the hoarder themselves. Wasn’t overly helpful or insightful and at times was patronising. Waste of a credit imo.

Easy to follow and great advice

As a keen watcher of the show Hoarders, I've always had quite a fascination for reading about the disorder. This audiobook is definitely a great resource for those who are hoarders or want to help someone who is a hoarder. The author lays out everything you need to know to tackle the issues, from explaining what causes the disorder and how to identify it, to how to tackle it in a way that will keep you successful in the long term. If I had one complaint, it's that, while the narrator's voice is pleasant, she reads it too slow for me. I had to speed it up to 1.25x in order to follow it better. Other than that, great listen and great information that you could apply to your regular life even if you aren't a hoarder!

The BEST strategy

After you read this book, you will understand why it is you hoard and have a solid plan to stop.

This book is super well researched and based on science and psychology. Half the battle is understanding why you hoard and this book will definitely shed some light on that.

If you're ready to change your life (or even just get rid of a little junk) this book is a great fit. The systems within can and will help you live a more decluttered life.

A 15-step logical process

This guide shows you what steps to take to declutter your life and reduce your anxiety. The audiobook empowers you to take back control of your disorder with multiple strategies. It all starts by recognizing if you have a hoarding disorder and what the psychological impact can cause on your life.

I liked the 4-box system being described in step 5 of the 15-step process when creating a sorting system. This guide offers sage advice for anyone wanting to embark on a journey of de-cluttering.

What to read when a loved one hoards

The audio format of this book makes it quick and easy to listen to. I was able to learn some valuable information while multi-tasking around the house. It felt like was actually working on what I was learning so it felt great and felt like it really stuck. I'm not a hoarder myself, at least I don't consider myself one, and this book was also very helpful for me to identify those traits in myself and others and stay proactive so I don't pick them up and so I can help those closest to me.

The audiobook isn't overly long and the chapters are succinct and, like I said, easy to listen to. The writer did a great job of making the subject flow. I especially like how I was able to create personalized questions and ask them of myself when I came across a useful concept. I don't know if I was the only one who felt motivated to do that but I highly recommend this book for the self-reflection it inspires.

Helpful, practical, effective

For those struggling with hoarding or any of its underlying psychological conditions, definitely check this one out. It talks about the subject in a very straightforward and easy-to-understand way. It also provides 15 steps to overcome hoarding and reduce clutter in your home. I found those steps to be effective and helpful. It's also packed with research and connections to the realms of psychiatry and psychology. It's well worth the listen!

Wish I had this the last time I moved

The cover for this audiobook is brilliant because it emphasizes the problem that many people have using no words. I have known several people with a hoarding problem, and you don’t realize how much stuff accumulates even with people without this problem. A couple of years ago, we moved out of state, and I threw out tons of things, but there was junk I couldn’t bear to leave. Even after paying for expensive movers to transport it to the next house, I didn’t think it was a problem. Several years later, I realized that if I haven’t used the stuff in over six months, then I don’t need it anyway. The book discusses emotional attachment. There is truth to this because a lot of purchase decisions are emotionally based. After listening to this book, I find it easier to rationalize what is and isn’t essential to keep.

Not a lot of help

The narration was too sing song. It sounded like a student presenting their report to a class, or like a 1st grade teacher explaining simple ideas to students. The information was ok and I learned a little. The book is very basic and stresses cbt which is fine, yet I was looking for more guidance from this book. An improvement would be attached pdf's of steps and techniques to follow. If there are attached tables or lists I cannot locate them on this app. This book might be better in writen format to use for guidance and audio for simple information about the topic.

delivery was too sterile for me

The content contained ideas and tips that are the same or similar what you'll find in most decluttering-type books. I didn't feel there was enough specific content and explanation into the root causes of hoarding. While the narrator's voice itself wasn't unpleasant, the delivery was consistently peppy, sterile, and unengaging. Think Stepford wives, a simulated voice, or someone reading a manual aloud.

We All Need to Declutter

A great reference for people looking to help themselves or a loved one overcome this issue. You never really understand the mind of someone living with this issue. The book provides great insight on this however to place yourself in their shoes, so to speak. The outlined steps in this book are also very helpful in organizing your own possessions regardless if you hoard or not!

Minimalism to me is like meditation!

I know it will be good, and bring about a ton of benefits for me, but I just do not know where to start... sooo I don't haha!

My place has been getting a bit messier lately though, and I really need a change. I need things to work more smoothly. I need less problems. This book has been wonderful help in that regard. It has made what I found to be an overwhelming challenge to be an easy, simplified, and approachable thing.

Highly recommend it if you relate to what I am saying!

Informative about Hoarding problems

Harrison covers many ways to deal with hoarding by looking at the psychological damage, from where it sprung. I recommend for hoarders, or people who know hoarders.

Good for families of hoarders

This book would be helpful to the family of a hoarder. It helps you understand some of the reasons people hoard so that maybe you’ll be more patient & understanding of the hoarder. I think if you have someone in your life that you want to help, that’s a hoarder, you would benefit from this book.

Fabulous Resource!

I found this book to be very informative and helpful. I definitely recommend it! This book is valuable to any counselor, family and friends of someone who is a hoarder and of course, the hoarder themselves. This is a great book for family members to listen to in order to understand what a hoarder experiences and how to support and assist the hoarder as they are working through this disorder. It is my belief that the diagnosis of "hoarding disorder" has been in many peoples minds, reduced to a "hoarder" label fueled by the mere misunderstanding of what hoarding is and what it isn't. The word needs to get out there so people can understand. It hurts my heart to think of the countless people who have this disorder and are criticized rather than helped.
