Summary
Half-sisters, Efie and Colina, are treated very differently by their mother, Fenella, who favors the vibrant Efie. Colina, the strikingly beautiful sister, is treated as a servant. Both girls lost their fathers under mysterious circumstances.
The eligible clan bachelors try to win the affections of Efie, and ignore the shy and quiet Colina. When Fenella hosts a banquet for Ross, the successor to the Lairdship of Elgin, in hopes that he will marry Efie, Efie wants no part of Ross.
