Summary

A stunningly told and deeply personal memoir from the lead singer of Irish rockband Kodaline.

Lead singer of the hugely successful Irish rock band Kodaline, Steve Garrigan plays to thousands of fans worldwide - his business is being in the spotlight. But for years, Steve was privately battling his own demons.

Here in this deeply personal memoir, he shares his experiences. From his childhood growing up in Dublin and the shyness that only dissolved when he was playing an instrument or in front of a microphone, to the highs of rock star success touring and playing stadiums, to the lows of anxiety, depression and panic attacks and how he was to discover that it was only by sharing his deepest vulnerability that he was able to work through the darkness, High Hopes is the candid account of how everyone carries a story - and how by embracing all the different parts of our true selves, we will ultimately find freedom and happiness.

Thought provoking, honest read. Highly recommended

I didn't check the blurb on this book before reading, but gave it a go as I love Kodaline music and thought it would be a fluffy read about their rise to fame. Although it does call out the not quite straightforward route to their success, what really drew me in was Steve's honest account of his battle with anxiety and depression. He described it in a level of detail that I have not come across previously which was both refreshing and really resonated with me. Particularly his challenge with discussing it with those nearest and dearest to him, and how he assumed his social anxiety was something wrong with him. I am delighted that he battled through and reaped the rewards of the success that his band enjoy, no one deserves it more. I also thought it was so unlike similar books I've read where people encounter mental illness and seem to be cured after one bout of treatment, this spoke of an ongoing challenge that he had had to face repeatedly. A beautiful read that I thoroughly enjoyed.

Insightful and beautiful

I could listen to his voice all day and what a heartfelt story. Learning how the lyrics to some of my favourite songs came to be was magical
