Summary
While Jamie’s cold, lifeless body lay in the morgue, Detective Kim Stone stared at the empty board in the incident room and felt her anger boil. Why were there no photos, details, or lines of enquiry?
When a 19-year-old boy, Jamie Mills, is found hanging from a tree in a local park, his death is ruled a suicide. Detective Kim Stone’s instincts tell her something isn’t right—but it’s not her investigation, and her temporary replacement is too busy waiting for the next big case to be asking the right questions.
Why would a seemingly healthy boy choose to end his life?
Why does his mother show no sign of emotional distress at the loss of her son?
Still mending her broken mind and body from her last harrowing case, Kim is supposed to be easing back into work gently. But then she finds a crucial, overlooked detail: Jamie had a recent injury that would have made it impossible for him to climb the tree. He must have been murdered.
Quickly taking back charge of her team and the case, Kim visits Jamie’s parents and is shocked to hear that they had sent him to a clinic to "cure" him of his sexuality. According to his mother, Jamie was introverted and prone to mood swings. Yet his friend speaks of a vibrant, outgoing boy.
The clues to smashing open this disturbing case lie behind the old Victorian walls of the clinic, run by the Gardner family. They claim that patients come of their own accord and are free to leave at any time. But why are those that attended the clinic so afraid to speak of what happens there? And where did the faded restraint marks identified on Jamie’s wrists come from?
Then the body of a young woman is found dead by suffocation and Kim makes two chilling discoveries. The victim spent time at the clinic too, and her death was also staged to look like a suicide.
Scarred from an ordeal that nearly took her life, is Kim strong enough to stop a terrifying killer from silencing the clinic’s previous patients one by one?

Irritating narrator (again)
Regardless of how good or bad the storyline is why on earth do you insist on employing this narrator ?? She’d be fine if she didn’t try to put on a shocking brummy accent when voicing Stacey. Please have a word I know the character is from the Birmingham area (which I am) but the attempted accent is awful and so irritating I’ve actually had to stop listening to several of these books previously:(

Dreadful narration
I made the mistake of not sampling this first and haven’t been able to get past the second page - I cannot stand the narrator’s silly sing song way of narrating, as if she were a particularly patronising mother reading to a two year old. Such a shame, I like Angela Marston, will have to read it instead!

Best yet!
I feel that this is the best Kim Stone epic yet. Totally fresh storyline. Not too much harking back to the past and it shows Kim as a person with emotions.

Mixed feelings
If you are Christian and Conservative then you're lumped with sick, disgusting people who hate gays. This turns a avid reader of Angela Marsons off.

Interesting concept
But a total cheese-fest. Could have done with 1/2 of the rants, 1/2 of the winks and 1/2 of the fist clenching. AM can and has done better than this.

From an American Christian Conservative
This was my favorite in the series. I read a review that said it put all Christian Conservatives in one lump and I didn’t think that at all. There are extremists in our religious world. It was clearly defined in the dialogue that “conversion therapy” is an extremist view and I agree. It is extreme! It is abhorrent! Extreme views, especially in a religious world are so damaging. I think Angela Marsons handled the subject superbly. Aside from all that, I am sad to have caught up with this series. LOVE the characters and the story lines!

Absolute Favorite !
This one was my absolute favorite in the series. Sometimes, I wish this was a tv series or a film series, but the dismiss those thoughts because I am too in love with how reading/listening to the series plays out in my mind because the writing is awesome and the magic of it flows so easily and wonderfully without any other visual distractions. I fear it couldn’t be done the right way and chosen actors wouldn’t live up to the expectations I have created in my head, if it were on screen!
Narration is perfect and Kim’s journey is portrayed subtly and IMO, realistically.
I can not wait for the next!

Yet Another Winner
No words can truly express how much I love this series! The fabulous Jan Cramer brings to life the fascinating stories that the brilliant Angela Marsons creates. I postponed listening to this latest one so as to delay the sadness when it’s over and I have to wait way too long for the next crime to be solved by Kim and her awesome team. I so appreciate how the author didn’t make light of Kim’s last traumatic experience, but realistically portrayed the difficult and continuing recovery process. I envy any reader who has not read or listened to every single book in this series, as they are in for a treat! Please hurry Angela with the next one! From an avid and devoted fan in Tennessee.
