Summary

A series of violent shark attacks off the shores of northern California draw the attention of pessimistic Detective Luke Jansen. Despite reports of shark sightings by witnesses, the injuries appear to be more reminiscent of a chainsaw-wielding maniac rather than shark bites.

Things get stranger when marine biologist Elise Sheldon encounters the creature. Exhausted and traumatized, she is quickly dismissed, after she makes the claim that the beast is a Helicoprion. Thought to be extinct, the creature wields a spiraling set of teeth that can dice anything caught in its path. Unable to convince anyone of its existence, Elise turns to Detective Jansen for assistance.

With little help from the police department, Luke and Elise form an unlikely alliance to uncover the truth. Their investigation puts them face-to-face with a violent man-eating shark, and the terrifying reason for its existence.

Very good but very long winded!

Very, very long winded story, winding through horror, thriller, sci-fi and drama. I enjoyed it but it was a marathon. I felt like I could’ve snipped 3 or 4 hours off the total time and still gotten the story across. Good character development, very decent narration. 4 stars because it was long enough to test the patience of a saint!

Clichéd nonsense

The only thing worse than the story was the narrator. I like sea based thrillers but this one was completely ridiculous with so many old tropes about detectives with seemingly supernatural abilities and his smart scientist female sidekick. I’m never going near this author again.

Never going into the sea again…

Expected it to be the usual rehashed ‘Jaws’ so was considerably surprised in the first hour. Thoroughly enjoyable, a couldn’t put it down read (listen).

Loved this

Loved the story. This is a superior 'sea beast' tale of a decent length. Starts 'Jaws-like' and becomes something else. I enjoyed the narration (including dodgy accents). A highly recommended listen.

Great book, poor narration

A great book let down by mediocre narration and an inability to do a British accent. For a character who's meant to be from South London, they sounded more Australian and the rest of the accents aren't much better.

Don't let that put you off, it's another superb book by Mr Cole.

Not bad

Enjoyable story but awful attempt at different accents by the narrator. I also found his voice irritating.

Gripping

l liked this, narration was good (apart from the attempt at an English accent). Sloppy science though, the author should know basic stuff like antibiotics are no good against a virus and that viruses do not lurk in DNA. Other than that, it's an enjoyable bit of escapism

Dirty Harry versus Jaws

Great story about a cloned prehistoric shark infected with a disease from 300,000,000 years ago got loose from a mad scientist lab and a grumpy, drunkard detective along with a lady ichthyologist who had to stop the evil genius and hunt down the cloned shark.

Pleasantly disappointed!!!

What I expected: Kinda cheesy sci-fi horror gratuitous bloody maiming and killing.
What I got: Some of that, but an actual plausible story too!!
I was kinda sad there wasn't a tad more shark action, but it was actually a good balance that honestly added to the storyline.
I really enjoyed this book!

Good all the way through

Although the beginning was a slow start the plot twists in the middle and end made for a great story. And setting up new possibilites. Loved it!

A cop story that just happens to have a shark.

I really wanted to like this book. It reads like a cop/detective story that just happens to have a prehistoric shark in it.
I could not stay interested and only got half way through before deleting it from my library. If you are looking for a shark thriller novel skip this one. Try Mr. Cole's other books Scar or Thresher instead.

Absolutely Recommend

This book was fantastic. The main character was well written, moody cop with a haunting past, it was kinda nice that the choice of shark wasn’t the usual Great White or Megaladon, and following a cop going after it instead of a scientist like a lot of these types of stories honestly just made more sense. The plague was a really nice what if touch as well. 2 days of listening very well spent.

wonderful

Has it all shark, plague, action, standard sulky cop with a dark past who has witness/partner romance, not over done though. Cliches are not overdone here. plenty of intrigue and what ifs to think about. At 16hrs it took 2 days to get through witch was great for work. my only short with the book is its hard to immerse yourself into at first but that will quickly change.

what the crap did I just listen to?

Seriously who gave this book more than two stars and why? It's horribly written, with so much irritating dialogue, I feel like I'm listening to teenagers, not alleged professionals. I tried to get through this and just couldn't. Too many sub plots and unlovable characters. One saving grace is that if this book got published, so can mine.

Like Meg…with Mercs!!!

Thoroughly enjoyed this book. Lots of action set pieces and gore galore. I really connected with the two main characters by the end. Luke was assholishly awesome. The story though, was some straight Bond villain type stuff. A little cheesy, but it worked in the end.
