Summary

Baranof Island, Gulf of Alaska, 1952. Jim Granger is searching for a place of legend. Known as Bad Water by the island's elders, it's reputed to be home to many dangerous creatures. Through a seam in a cliff face, Jim finds what he seeks. He also finds, too late, that the water demon he was warned about is horrifyingly real.
Today Cate Granger is following in her grandfather's footsteps. Along with a team of scientists and crew, she accidentally releases a creature from Earth's primordial past into today's oceans. The giant megalodon shark follows its instinct and a genetic memory of a home that existed millions of years ago along the Californian coast.
Nothing is safe on or below the water as the monster stakes its claim on the world's oceans. Now Cate and her team must do battle with a creature that has no rival, knows no fear, and regards humans as nothing more than prey.

Good premise, somewhat flat characters.
The premise of the story is great. love the ideas and execution in the initial phases of the book. However, characters feel somewhat flat and leaves you wondering why they would do what they do later in the book with the exception of one or two. Performance feels a bit flat and without excitement or anticipation where you would expect it.
The use of the words, 'Stygian' and 'Torpedo' is somewhat excessive.
With those issues it's still a good read and has a place in this genre. Would I listen to it a second time, no. Would I recommend it to a friend into the same genre, yes.

Great story, unfortunate pronunciation
I'm torn between loving what is a fantastic novel and the fact that the narrator consistently mispronounced megalodon to the point where it really grated to have to listen to it. Carcharodon and carcharias were also mangled, although not to the painful extent megalodon was. It's a massive shame, as the narrator has such a beautiful voice.

It was "this" big!
I'm a nut for the genre, so my opinion may be slightly skewed, but I really enjoyed this book.
As others have stated, some words or phrases do pop up a bit too regularly, though I believe this book was written earlier in the authors career, so it can be overlooked.
The narrator, Sean Mangan, also does a whoopsie in his pronunciation of "Megalodon", which when you consider is "the" main character, can't help but grate each time it's spoken, that said, we are all to familiar with this particular prehistoric shark nowadays, but they were far less spoken of at the time of writing, so again, we must overlook this. Furthermore, Sean Mangans' general skill as a narrator far outweighs any errors present here, and if I could pay for him to whisper me to sleep each night I would, though my wife may complain.
All in all, if big creatures eating people is your bag, then get ready to pack the kitchen sink, because this bag is full to the brim with cliched silly sausages getting chomped right up.
Despite its flaws, this is a very enjoyable book and one I've listen to now a few times, and about to start "The Abyss", it's sequel.

Good stuff, lots better than "The Meg"...
Thoroughly enjoyable horror/sc-fi/thriller with a great big fish. Ideal Winter listening, strongly recommended if you like this sort of thing. It's basically "The Meg" with (slightly) better science and considerably better writing.
One caveat: be prepared to have Mr Mangan pronounce Megalodon as "mega-load-on" all the way through. It really grates but after the first forty or so times I got so I could ignore it. Apparently he gets it right in book 2, so that's all right.

If you've read Jaws and Meg you've read this book
Boring narration, deus ex machinas, editing mistakes and clichés galore! Long, but not great. unless you have a long journey to fill give this one a miss.

Bit predicable but good fun
The story is solid, if sometimes a bit predictable. Characters a bit flat and the romance... I rolled my eyes. Otherwise good fun.

Mega-lodon!!!
I love this topic and genre so was a fun listen. As almost everyone has said the pronunciation of mega-lodon was weird but hey! You get over it - eventually!! Not the best but an easy read/listen.
