Summary

One title to change his life...

A disgraced son with a dark reputation, William Ferguson Avenel is content to live in exile in Scotland - until his father dies in the scandal of the Season, making him the new Duke of Rothwell and leaving him in charge of his young sisters. With rumors of insanity swirling around their family, the girls desperately need a chaperone. And he thinks he's found the lady for the job...until Rothwell discovers her dangerous secret life.

One chance to break the rules....

Lady Madeleine Vaillant may be the perfect chaperone, but she can't face her blighted future without making one glorious memory for herself. In disguise on a London stage, she finds all the adoration she never felt from the ton. But when she's nearly recognized, she will do anything to hide her identity - even make a devil's bargain with Rothwell, who saves her from discovery by claiming her as his mistress. She'll take the pleasure he offers - but Madeleine won't lose her heart in the bargain.

One season to fall in love...

Every stolen kiss could lead to discovery, and Rothwell's old enemies are determined to ruin them both. But as their dangerous passion ignites their hearts and threatens their futures, how can an heiress who dreams of freedom deny the duke who demands her love?

Too long

Good plot but too drawn out. Spicy in places but not crude. Narrator did well.

loved the story

Loved every second of the story. Kept me intrigued all the way. Can't say the same about the narrator though. I didn't like her voice for the men especially for Ferguson. But I will definitely continue listening to the whole series. Thank you Audible for the free gift

An enjoyable listen

This is probably very subjective, but I like the voice donned for Ferguson and was really intrigued by it when (randomly finding and) listening to Book 4 in the series.
Plot is good, but I do agree that it drags at certain moments.

Good?

Pretty okay historical romance.
Even though all elements are what I would usually like, it somehow didn't grib me as much as I thought it would.
Absolutely no clue why.

A Pleasant surprise

Despite previous reviews, this title is not bad at all! The storyline is credible and the supporting characters are interesting enough. Give it a chance, especially as it’s a freebie from Audible. If this is your genre, then you’ll be pleasantly surprised. Book 2 is included at the end to tempt, and it sounds as pleasant as this.

This narrator is great with accents and is convincing.

Annoying lead character

The main character is very annoying and self centered. It does not make sense that anyone would be obsessed with her, let alone this a-hole of a duke. He has to beg her repeatedly to marry him after taking her virginity? Lol riiiight. That is how it would have worked for sure. She is the best actress in the entire worrrrrllld so she is... get this... blackmailed into performing for a month!! Hahaha! She offers to buy the lady a new theater building but NO! Only a month of her great talent will do! She is so captivating that it doesn’t matter that she is putting her entire family at risk! She is the wronged party here! How dare they threaten to send her away for her poor judgement! They are the woooorst! /s The whole story is dumb, the characters are irritating. The narrator has a soothing voice, bordering on an ASMR type of vibe.

What a nice surprises

This book surprised me. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would.

It was entertaining. I liked the main characters but I admit some of the secondary ones confused me. I find this on occasion with audiobooks. It can be difficult to sort all the characters when you can't just look back a paragraph or two to see who's who.

The narration was quite good. I have the next book in my library already.

Great Period Romance Novel

Well let me say this book was awesome, with a great Narrator. I was pleasantly surprised with the story line. Unlike many other books where the Heroine is 21 yrs old, this series is about women that are older and have passions for writing, acting ect... none of witch are acceptable passions for ladies of London in the 1800's. Great plot that held my attention. I listened in one sitting. Worth a credit? YES and I just started period novels! I will going to the next book in the series. I also love that all of the books in the series came out at the same time so no waiting!

Tiresome

Very self-centered heroine. Quite unlikable . Hero was better. Real problem here was it was just plain too long and therefore tiresome. There were several places the story could have stopped and it should have.

Awful narrator !

I couldn’t finish this book , it did have promise but the narrator killed it . The male voice was the same as the female , just awful. Authors should be aware how a narrator can make or break her book .

Good HR story

This was a decent HR story and I found myself periodically rooting for the MCs. The author kept the story properly set for the times in which their was a huge separation between the classes and women were essentially property. I know that this offends some readers who would rather have a modern woman challenging the rules overtly but the times were much different back then and included dire consequences.

I did not understand the h's reticence to marry the H as he ticked the boxes she was looking for.

Looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

A good romp through Victorian times.

A believable plot for the time period, when obsession with a lady's virtue makes it challenging to pursue one's dreams.

Enjoyed

Skeptical at first, but found the book very enjoyable. It is definately worth a credit. Perhaps a bit unbelievable but held my interest. The narrator did an excellent job.

The "bad" guy wins

What was one of the most memorable moments of Heiress Without a Cause?

When William discovers the Madeline's true identity.

What about Emma Powell’s performance did you like?

I love her distinction of characters. I love to listen to books, rather than watch TV or reading (love to read, bad eyesight though) and having an awesome narrator brings the story to life.
