I found I have little patience for Beth and the end was so Hollywood predictable, I was left extremely disappointed despite being drawn into the story. The way Beth deals with the ending is totally unrealistic. I read this ahead of it being my book club suggestion then decided I wouldn't recommend it, fine if you choose to but wasn't prepared to subject my club to it.

Thank goodness Sophie Hannah is back on form after her last appalling novel Did you see Melody ?
No-one writes physiological novels like Hannah and this one is every bit as good as her others in the Culver Valley series although this is a stand alone novel.

The end is a bit exposition-ey. Narrator was very good. Story was just gripping enough. It's not amazing but did the job. Happy to pay for it

This book started off so well, the characters were well defined, good narrative and the promise of a really interesting plot surrounding two children who appear not to have aged over a twelve-year period. I was really enjoying it and anticipating a real twist. Sadly this book descended into farce in the final chapters, without giving anything away the reader is asked to suspend belief and buy into what was for me a very silly story. When I realised where the plot was heading I almost did not bother to listen to the end. Such a shame as this story could have been really interesting and a bit different from the usual psych thriller.

I loved the first two thirds of this, and up until then thought this was Sophie Hannah’s best yet: really intriguing premise, and excellent mother-daughter detecting duo! The final third was good but felt like it belonged to a slightly different book. Still, overall this was a gripping listen and highly recommended.
