Summary

In the gentle coastal town of South Cove, California, all Jill Gardner wants is to keep her store - Coffee, Books, and More - open and running. So why is she caught up in the business of murder?

When Jill's elderly friend Miss Emily calls in a fit of pique, she already knows that the city council is trying to force Emily to sell her dilapidated old house. But Emily's gumption goes for naught when she dies unexpectedly and leaves the house to Jill, along with all of her problems...and her enemies. Convinced that her friend was murdered, Jill is finding the list of suspects longer than the list of repairs needed on the house. But Jill is determined to uncover the culprit - especially if it gets her closer to South Cove's finest, Detective Greg King. The problem is, the killer knows that she's on the case - and is determined to close the book on Jill permanently.

Murder and an inheritance

I want to say I enjoyed this book but the middle slowed down to much for my liking and for me to give it five stars. The story got complicated with who was related or not to who but it did mean there was a number of suspects. The mystery didn't always take centre stage as the remodelling of the house took over and complicated the main characters life. I liked the characters and will join them for another mystery.
Miss Emily's house is a mess and the town council are taking steps for her to either do something about it or they will cease her house, which is why her good friend Jill pays her a visit. Instead of cutting her grass Jill finds her friend dead and herself inheriting the nightmare property. But somebody else wants the house and will stop at nothing to get it. Even murder Miss Emily? Jill thinks so but can she put the house to rights and find a killer? Especially as Jill and the house seem to be targets.
I liked the narrator. She used her voice well to give each character a different sounding voice.
