Story
Private Jake Elliott was apprehensive as he walked to the commander’s office. He couldn’t think of a single transgression that would have attracted the major’s attention. When he left the command building 10 minutes later, he was still numbed by the short visit. Tomorrow, he would no longer be a cavalryman, but would be returning to the family ranch outside of Fort Benton in Montana Territory. But it was the reason he was being discharged before his enlistment expired that had been the biggest shock.

Story
The scheduled train from Granger was overdue by three hours. He’d suspected a mechanical breakdown or maybe even a derailment. But the engineer of the next train to use that track had just reported that he hadn’t found any signs of the train. He had no idea how an entire train could simply vanish, but as he pondered the mystery, the head telegrapher came to his office and showed him a telegram that had been sent to Union Pacific headquarters. It was a ransom demand for $100,000.

Erin Wade's historical lesbian novel is set in West Texas where cattle and oil were king and men were masters of their fate. A woman didn't have a chance of making it in the straight-shooting, fast-riding, hard-drinking world of the Texas cowboy...or did she? A novel about a love so forbidden, it wasn't even whispered. A heroine so unlikely, she wasn't believed.

Summary
Eighteen-year-old Garrett Shaw and his father spotted the rustlers and pulled their Winchesters. They kept their muzzles pointed away from the three men who were stealing eight steers from their small ranch to give them a chance to leave peaceably. When they were close, Garrett’s father shouted for them to just go away and he wouldn’t notify the sheriff.
The rustlers responded by pulling their pistols. When they started throwing lead, Garrett and his father began returning fire. Garrett hit one of the rustlers just as his father’s horse went down. As the wounded man raced away, Garrett shot a second a second rustler before he reached his father.
The rustlers had run off, leaving the family’s cattle, but his father’s leg had been crushed by his horse. Hours later, as the doctor examined his father’s injury, Garrett knew that it was now his responsibility to provide for his crippled father, mother, and sisters.
Any hopes he had for starting his own family would have to wait.

Garretts Duty!
Another great listen from CJ Petit, the more I read the more I like these type of books. This one is fast paced and how Garrett survives beats me but then again he's the good guy! ☺ It's a bit like a selection of short stories all held together by a common theme and it works well. Mike Alan White does a wonderful job of the narration as usual and even gets his own part to play in the story. No hesitation in giving 5 stars to this book and I look forward to reviewing many more in the future.
I was kindly given a copy of this book by the narrator and leave this voluntary and unbiased review. *****

Garrett's Duty
My husband and I discovered CJ Petit about a month ago. We've listened to 2 books and read 4 so far.
To Mr. Petit, we didn't think we'd ever find a western author like you again. You write so well, telling interesting engaging stories, with humor and without profanity or explicit sexual scenes. You are a joy to read. Please keep writing books and please thank your daughter from my husband and I for encouraging you to print them. You are a remarkable man!

Another amazing book!!!
I loved all the characters in this book they were so much fun. I didn't really have any slow parts to it. The narration is awesome. The narrator has to go through so many characters and he does such a good job doing it. This is the second book in one week and I'm going on my third . 👍

Garrett is a learn from mistake person
I loved Garrett's duty because he did help his family.
Some people had to leave home join the military so they could
send money home to help their families. It doesn't matter: deputy like Garrett, soldier in U.S.Air Force or
work in a car factory to bring in money to pay family needs. In 1960's rent in some places 65 dollars monthly
now in 2022 rent is 600 dollars monthly.

Garrett's Dutry
This is an excellent book that keeps you wanting to hear the next chapter and find out how everything is going to turn out. Garrett keeps things interesting. I got aggravated at times for him always doing the right thing for everyone else and not for him but that's what makes him who he is. C.J. Petit wrote a great book . I hope there is a book two in the future. I also hope the same person narrates it. Michael Alan White does an excellent job narrating this book. just ok
I give this story 2stars not for the life of me I can't understand why everybody wants Garrett to marry Maddy she brings nothing to the story she's so immature and silly she has a understanding with Garrett and with in minutes she agrees to marry someone else Garrett is a very kind compassionate man the writer should have someone complimenting him the rest of the characters in this book have no interesting qualities the narrator did a fair job
