Shortlisted for the 2021 An Post Irish Book Awards
Sometimes the people who have the power to change your life are the ones who have been there all along....
Like stars in the dark skies above the tiny island where she grew up, freckles scatter Allegra Bird’s arms, a link to her beloved father. She’s never known her mother.
In a quest to find the one thing she’s missing she begins a bold new life in Dublin.
But she’s left a lot behind.
So when a stranger tells her she’s the sum of five people - the five people she spends the most time with - she’s suddenly no longer seeking one person. She’s looking for five. And the truth lies in unexpected places....
Life-affirming, beautiful and thought-provoking, Freckles is an unforgettable novel of five people, five chances and one woman’s search for happiness.
Cecelia Ahern’s previous novel Postscript was a Sunday Times best seller w/c 16th September 2019.

"Cleverly constructed, full of flavour and moving." (Daily Mail)
"As this gorgeous novel illuminates, life goes on, even in the wake of loss." (Nicholas Sparks, best-selling author of The Notebook)
"A warm and bittersweet tale about finding yourself through family and friendship." (Sunday Telegraph)
"Everything a greedy reader wants: a moving story, absorbing characters, engaging writing and as much of a page-turner as you’d expect." (Irish Times)

Not for me!!
This is the story of Alegra Bird from Valentia Island who has moved to Dublin to try and locate the mother who left her as a baby. I felt drawn to this book as I like Alegra have plenty of freckles, she used hers as a child to draw constellations on her arms, mine are on my face so that would have looked quite strange and drawn in a few weird glances!!!
While in Dublin she becomes a parking attendant, which is where she meets Tristan a Ferrari driving flouter of the parking rules. I know we need to follow the rules, however she is so annoyingly strict with the rules, pedantic even. The quirkiness of her strict routine lost its shine after a few times of it being mentioned and it became repetitive. After a dialogue with Tristan he says to her…..
‘You are the average of the five people they spend the most time with’
This is really the premise of the book, it doesn’t go much deeper than this and I found myself wanting more from the story, which sadly never came. I didn’t like several of the characters and thought they were portrayed in a way that just didn’t suit the story.
The best thing about this book was the narration, Amy McAllister did a fantastic job!!!
I have not read a Celia Ahern book for a long, long. long time and I have to say that after this one, I unfortunately won’t be rushing to pick up another.

Different to her other books
I have read every one of Cecelia A'Hern books and have loved all of them. This was different! it was slow to start and slightly boring - However, it did improve and I'm glad I stuck with it, as it turned out actually quite good, definitely thought provoking. The audio transcript was performed brilliantly.
