Summary

After the death of her mother and the end of a postdivorce relationship leave her heartbroken, novelist Amanda Brookfield finds her once secure world imploding.

As despair closes in, she talks of getting a puppy to revive her optimistic spirit. Amanda is advised that her lifestyle will not suit becoming a dog owner, but she can't resist Mabel, a beautiful golden doodle puppy. Arming herself with an arsenal of equipment, Amanda learns that there are no shortcuts to training and caring for a dog.

Through battling daily challenges and constantly regrouping, Amanda realises she is starting to come to terms with her bereavement and the prospect of facing the rest of her life alone.

For the Love of a Dog tells the bigger, more poignant story about the labour of emotional recovery after the trauma of loss. Mabel shines like a light throughout, the unwitting architect of rebuilding self-belief. Mabel's own journey is equally captivating, as she blossoms into a mischievous, endearing head turner of a companion - as affectionate as she is glorious.

A different but engaging listen.

I do not own a dog, although have in the past. There is so much more that is therapeutic in this book, other than the bond between author and dog. I would recommend it to dog owners and non dog owners alike, as I feel sure anyone would gain something from reading or listening to it.

Not a book for anyone who knows about dog training

The narration is painful. Slow and very stilted. I had to put the speed up in the end. There are long pauses, but in all the wrong places - sometimes every two or three words. If you know anything about dogs and dog training, you will be cringing at every action. I kept waiting for the author to see the light and get proper guidance, but unfortunately this did not appear to happen and the whole story is told very much from the perspective of the pet owner, bumbling along and with no apparent reference to modern dog training and behaviour. Even her original purchase had the indication of a puppy farm. I ploughed on to the end waiting for the dog aspect to become interesting, but to be honest, the dog was just the foil for the author's emotional recovery. It could have been a cat, or a person or an object. Thankfully, and unsurprisingly, the author does confess that this will probably be her first and last dog.
