Summary

Robin Hobb returns to her best-loved characters with the second volume in a brand-new series.

Happy endings never last....

Years ago they freed a dragon from the glaciers on Aslevjal. Then they parted ways, the Fool returning to far-off Clerres while Fitz finally claimed a wife, a family, and a home of his own. Now, betrayed by his own people and broken by torment, the Fool has made his way back to the Six Duchies.

But as Fitz attempts to heal his old friend in Buckkeep Castle, his young daughter, Bee, is abducted from Withywoods by pale and mysterious raiders who leave ruin and confusion in their wake. Fitz must find a way to rescue his beloved Bee.

At the same time it is the Fool's fiercest wish to return to Clerres with the best assassin he has ever known, to gain vengeance and justice. Can Fitz bear to take up the tools of his old trade again, even to avenge his dearest friend and save his child?

Critic reviews

"Robin's secret is not just in the detail with which she depicts the Six Duchies world she has explored over 20 years, but her emphasis on internal drama...the feelings of anguish, ambiguity, fear and failure are as familiar as those in a novel by Jonathan Franzen." ( Independent on Sunday)
"Glorious and beautiful storytelling from Robin Hobb." ( SciFi Now)
"Hobb seamlessly blends intrigue, action and characters who feel so real that they become more than words on a page.... Every second spent in her world is a privilege and a pleasure." ( SFX)
"Robin Hobb's Fitz and the Fool series continues to delight." ( Starburst Magazine)
"Another crowning career achievement in the lifetime of one of fantasy's modern-day masters." ( Fantasy Book Review)
"Fantasy as it ought to be written." (George R. R. Martin)

Great combining of the world

Great story but in long running stories narrator's should at least be vaguely familiar with those that went before, some accents and pronunciations were very jarring

Fitz back on track

The first book in this trilogy was painfully slow and dull, this, on the other hand, is everything but. Finally a story that ebbs and flows, making you fall back in love with Fitz. I started this one out of a sense of duty to the trilogy given its predecessors lack lustre performance, but I'm glad I did and look forward to the finale. This is Fitz as it should be.

Superb story, as always. Narrators inconsistent through series.

My main quibble with having got this far through this incredible series of books is: WHY is there no consistency? Why on Earth are the new Elderlings now suddenly German?! Why does the Fool whine perpetually?

How difficult could it be to brief the (on the whole, excellent) narrators on what has gone before? “Here is how the names of characters and places are pronounced, here is how they have been portrayed in the earlier recordings.” They of course would add their own style and take on the characters, but hearing a ‘comedy’ German SS accent from a well-loved character is rather jolting.

I do understand that it might not be possible to stick with one set of readers, but to have them vary so very much from trilogy to trilogy is just hugely distracting from this truly epic journey.

It detracts from Robin Hobb’s masterpiece, and therefore does her a great disservice.

Approaching the end game

So I have followed the whole series from book one and the young Fitz given into Burrich's care to now over the last three months and what a journey with one to go. What an epic story so far. Fitz and the Fool are great characters but Bee (of whom, sadly, there was relatively little in this book) may outdo both. One to go. There may be tears ahead.

a continually fantastic series.

I thoroughly enjoyed the dual naration in this story. my only issue is the really bad editing of the name Vindalier. it really jarred.
