Summary

From the globally-recognized personal finance educator and social media star behind Her First $100K, an inclusive guide to all things money—from managing debt to investing and voting with your dollars

Tori Dunlap was always good with money. As a kid, she watched her prudent parents balance their checkbook every month and learned to save for musical tickets by gathering pennies in an Altoids tin. But she quickly discovered that her experience with money was pretty unusual, especially among her female friends.

It wasn’t our fault. Investigating this financial literacy and wealth gap, Tori found that girls are significantly less likely to receive a holistic financial education; we’re taught to restrain our spending, while boys are taught about investing and rewarded for pursuing wealth. In adulthood, women are hounded by the unfounded stereotype of the frivolous spenders whose lattes are to blame for the wealth gap. And when something like, say, a global pandemic happens, we’re the first to have jobs cut and the last to re-enter the workforce. It's no wonder money is a source of anxiety and a barrier to equality for so many of us.

But what if money didn't mean restriction, and instead, choice? The ability to luxuriously travel, quit toxic jobs, donate to important organizations, retire early? The freedom to live the life you want, and change the world while you do it?

Tori founded Her First $100K to teach women to overcome the unique obstacles standing in the way of their financial freedom. In Financial Feminist, she distills the principles of her shame- and judgment-free approach to paying off debt, figuring out your value categories to spend mindfully, saving money without monk-like deprivation, and investing in order to spend your retirement tanning in Tulum.

Featuring journaling prompts, deep-dives into the invisible aspects of the financial landscape, and interviews with experts on everything money—from predatory credit card companies to the racial wealth gap and voting with your dollars—Financial Feminist is the ultimate guide to making your money work harder for you (rather than the other way around.)

Entering my rich woman era

Loved it, and will be forcing everyone in my life to read it! Working with additional resources for audiobooks is a bit difficult but that's on me for not getting a hard copy.

Love love love this book!

I think every woman should listen to this book! I have been waiting for it to come out as I am an avid listener to Tori’s podcast, Financial Feminist. Financial education is power as a woman and Tori educated in an entertaining way with practical tips making it an easy read - thank you Tori! Don’t be put off by it being American e.g. Roth IRAs/401k - everything can be made relevant to the UK as we have equivalents here. Also if you’re looking for a HYSA - Money Saving Expert is a great website to find ones in the UK.

If you believe in Manifesting

Great if you want to imagine what life would be like if you grew up in wealth with parents who taught you basic money skills, and are willing to wait through all of that to hear accounts from people who did not start with that huge head start, and can wait through long advertisements for her other projects. Good to know what other people who know take for granted.

As someone whose parents did not buy her candy vending machines to fill and profit from at twelve, I found her very annoying, especially the repeated name dropping and dog whistles for The Secret.

A realistic view into the financial world

Tori does a fantastic job in presenting the world of finance in a realistic way by doing the bare minimum of addressing the EXISTENCE of systemic oppression (a lot of other finance books already fail at this point) and outlining how systemic oppression manifests itself into financial struggles felt by marginalized groups.

She does a very important job of not blaming the financially struggling for having financial struggles. Such empathy is such a stark contrast of the dismissive “if you’re financially struggling it’s somehow ultimately your fault” rhetoric those who sit perched atop their gilded towers ignorant of other life experiences than their own love to spout out.

This book sucks

This book is trash. It insults women’s intelligence and tries to frame them as victims. It’s woke bs.

I F**%#£€$ing Love You

This was an amazing and surprisingly quick and fun read. I’m in my mid 50s & yes there were lots of funny references that sort of went over my head—Timmy Chalamet, I can’t be your girlfriend because I’m probably the same age as your mom, so that would be bad. While I was listening I couldn’t help but think, “where have you been my whole life?” But alas Tori wasn’t born or there for me, or for my Mom for that matter, when I needed this advice and guidance. But she’s here now and I’m listening. Tori, I hope I’m not your oldest fan, but I’m willing to accept it if I am. This book is great, even if you’re not the target audience for this book, as honestly I think it resonates just as much for us women in our 50s & 60s who after love & loss are stuck now working on our finances yet again, and realize that so many of our problems have to do with our thoughts and beliefs about ourselves that have been passed down by our moms/ dads / negative experiences, which most definitely in my case are about work and money and what I think I deserve. Tori’s voice is amazing, not just her can do attitude, but also her empathy for all of us who need it now. Thank you for this lovely gift.

What the Doctor Ordered!

At last a resource that breaks down the stigmas around financial literacy and provides a strategic method for getting your money to work for you. This author is courageous, witty and has no hidden agenda. In fact it’s her matter-of-fact writing style that made this such a fun audible listen! I’m mid-aged and found so many helpful suggestions, can’t wait to report back on my success. Thanks Tori Dunlap for your work, the world needs your voice!

Amazing book: Exactly what the world needs more of.

We need more empowerment and less shame around money and personal finance, and this book delivers that.

It is exactly what I wish I had learned back in highschool or even college, when the resounding advice was just “Go to college so you can get a good job”.

I soon realized I had to figure out my own priorities: And this book helped tremendously. It gets to the root of emotional spending instead of just telling you that you’re bad with money and need to cut back on lattes.

The reset button we’ve all been avoiding, finance

Tori and HFK WOW! So inspiring, the thought process and considerations of the audience; because personal finance IS personal. So true! Love this, and because I want more I’ll continue reading it again and again and listen to her podcast. Thank you Tori, I hope this book reaches far and wide after all of the hard work you and your team put in.
