Summary

Fatherland is set in an alternative world where Hitler has won the Second World War. It is April 1964 and one week before Hitler's 75th birthday. Xavier March, a detective of the Kriminalpolizei, is called out to investigate the discovery of a dead body in a lake near Berlin's most prestigious suburb.

As March discovers the identity of the body, he uncovers signs of a conspiracy that could go to the very top of the German Reich. And, with the Gestapo just one step behind, March, together with an American journalist, is caught up in a race to discover and reveal the truth - a truth that has already killed, a truth that could topple governments, a truth that will change history

Interesting and well performed

Was a bit unsure of where the story was going to begin with but really came together at the end, well worth sticking with

Couldn't stop listening!

A brilliant book, been meaning to read/listen to it for years! Finally decided to get it after watching the final season of 'The man in the high castle.' no sci-fi element, which isn't a bad thing, but more how it could have played out after the war and explored through the eyes of detective March (don't know if that is correct spelling as iv listened to it). Great listen and would recommend it to any history buffs or crime readers!

Gripping

This book really makes you think long and hard about what life could have been like if history had been different. It is a gripping and enthralling read. This is Robert Harris at his best.

Excellent thriller

Jayston, already known from le Carré readings, is a natural for this. Great story, well crafted and using credible characters who develop both themselves and the plot. Harris employs a good pace and just enough twists to keep the reader enthralled without going over the top (a la Dan Brown). Thoroughly recommended.

What if?

This is a very good alternative history of What would have happened in Germany if America had not intervened. The background research is commendable, and the storyline is both gripping and realistic. For fans of Dominion by CJ Sampson, this makes a great companion book.

Nail biting till the end

Well plotted thriller with unusual setting. A warning from history to all middle of the road voters of the risks they take voting with or for right wing extremists as the German population did voting for Hitler in 1933. Effectively we rescued them from living with their mistakes long term but this book gives a taste of what might have been if we had not succeeded. Brexit voters beware of right wing extremists!

Excellent performance and story.

Excellent performance and story. Gripping to the very end. Works as a story and also as dystopian alternative history. Believable characters and diverting plot twists.
