Summary
The official prequel and origin story of the best-selling Extinction Cycle series!
One marine’s end is the beginning of our extinction....
For a dozen years, villagers along the ancient Da River in Vietnam have feared a nightmarish creature who hunts and consumes human flesh. Only in whispers do they mention its name, The White Ghost.
To the United States military, this creature has a different name - Marine Lieutenant Trevor Brett, the chemically engineered experiment gone wrong that they will do anything to hide. Sole survivor of his platoon, Brett has stalked the jungle for prey for over a decade. But the men who made him into a monster are searching for him, and when they find him, the line between hunter and hunted will be blurred.

Dull narrator
Wanted to listen before books 1 - 3 as I am a RC Bray fan. Couple of hours was enough, terribly dull narration, moving straight onto the Master's work. Sorry.

Good but could have been great
I enjoyed this book the story line was good
But it could have been great the book wastes time with a side story that adds nothing to the book I can’t help but think that the book would have been great if the time spent wasted was used to fill out the Main storyline

Death
The story was really good, but I'm sad to say, I found the narrator to monotone for my liking. I nearly tied it off after the first chapter, but I'm glad I stuck with it. I will start the test of the series.

Perfect Beginning!
I have been waiting for this book!!! Initially released as a Kindle World book, it has been expanded and is finally available for people outside the US.
If you've read the Extinction Cycle books, you will be familiar with Marine Lieutenant Trevor Brett. The first book in the series, Extinction Horizon, starts with seeing Brett take an experimental drug that is supposed to make them Super Soldiers, but it does something no one expected and creates a monster! Extinction Red Line is Brett's story and a back story to how VX-99 came to be.
This first takes place when Brett and his team is sent to a village in Vietnam suspected of Vietcong activity. They are given the drug and upon using it, they change. Brett is the only one left and enters the Jungle. Years of tales about a White Ghost plague the region and a Journalist takes up the story. He heads to the jungle in hopes of getting the full story and possibly a picture. What he doesn't realise is that nobody who sees the White Ghost is left alive. When the military see the story they realise that this has to be contained as nobody knows about the experiment gone wrong. They send a team into the jungle to find Brett, but Brett is a top predator now and isn't easy to find!
I have to applaud the authors! Not many times have I read a book that has left me as speechless as this one did. This book was phenomenal!!!! The fact that they make you root for a monster speaks volumes for their writing ability. Brett is a monster, plain and simple, but you can't help but love his character. His strength of character was amazing and the battle within himself was brilliantly written. I felt so sorry for him.
The plot is extremely fast paced and intense, I mean edge of your seat, can't put down, intense!! I didn't just read this, I devoured it and immediately started listening to the first book, Extinction Horizon, again. It just cemented the fact that this series is amazing. I highly, highly recommend you read these books!!!
Bronson Pinchot is amazing. It boggles my mind with how many different voices he can do!! It's almost like listening to a full cast reading it. I also love that he puts emotion behind his performance, which in turn brings the atmosphere alive. Brilliant reading of a phenomenal book.

The Prequel we have been waiting for!
I’ve been waiting for the Story of Brett to finally come to life!! This by far in my opinion completes the already great Extinction Cycle series!! NS and TA couldn’t have written this any better. I’ve gone back to “Horizon” and intend to finish the series again! I didn’t want the story to end and it’s not going to!
What I really liked about the book was detailed point of view through Brett. You almost feel bad for the guy. He didn’t ask to be turned into a creature. The voice inside
His head was great!! NS and TA really made this creature come to life! I could hear his joint and limbs popping while he got on all fours and sprinted.
I highly recommend this to anybody who loves zombie style books! But be aware, these aren’t your typical zombies!!

Back to the beginning!
This is an incredible beginning story of the Extinction series. I love that we get to know more about certain characters (No spoilers!) This is an expanded edition of the previous "kindle world" book and the co-authoring between Nicholas Sansbury Smith and Tom Abrahams is phenomenal. Bronson Pinchot is one of my favorite narrators also. I mean this combination is just perfect! If you've read (or listened) to any of the other extinction cycle books you MUST get this one too. Even if you haven't, this is the perfect entrance into the whole series.

A story where you end up rooting for the monster
- Josh here
This is a book that is something I felt was long overdue to help set the stage for how VX-99 and the variants came to be. Nick and Tom did a fantastic job of presenting the backstory for one of my favorite book series. By the end of the story, I found myself rooting for Lieutenant Brett. It was very interesting to get inside the head of the monster and understand what was going on in there, what was driving him, and to see the remnants of humanity that lingered after his injection. I also found myself drawn to Lynn and Dew and the way their relationship formed throughout the story.
The only thing I would have added to the story is a transition to the modern time, just before the Team Ghost insertion mission, to showcase the events leading up to that operation. Perhaps a book .75 is coming? If so, I will be first in line to buy it. The teamwork between Nick and Tom resulted in a wonderful precursor to the EC series and I hope the two of them team up to bring us more.
Now I need to re-listen to the series again because I have an itch that must be re-scratched.

Amazing Backstory
Amazing read. I love all of the extinction cycle books. I really love the kindle world books as well. Red line was one of my favorite books. We know of lt Brent from the main series but we really never knew the hell that he went through. Or the hell the he wrought. Now we have an even more in depth background. Easy five stars for both Smith and Abrahams! Bronson helped bring this story to life. I highly recommend all of his books as well.

Grabbed me at Chapter 1. A great prequel! 5 ⭐️
I’m a huge fan of Tom Abrahams so I had no doubt this would be a great read.
The book just takes off at a fast pace and doesn’t slow down! An experiment gone horribly wrong turns this Marine into a killing machine... there is plenty of gore involved, but my heart goes out for “Trevor Brett” aka “The White Ghost “.
The military doesn’t want their experiment that went terribly wrong exposed, so the hunt for the “monster” they created begins. Will they find him, or does he hunt them? I’m not saying more!
I haven’t read the series that this prequel is based on, but it’s on my list now!
Bronson Pinchot does a great narration!
If you’re a fan of Tom Abrahams and/or Nicholas Sandsbury Smith, you won’t be disappointed!
Five stars all the way on this book!

This thrilling origin story to the incredibly popular Extinction Cycle series is a pulse-pounder. Strong characterization. Superior storytelling and narration. A real joy for lovers of the post apocalyptic genre.

beginning of the end...
a must for all who follow NSS's Extinction Cycle...from the Soldier that was lied to as he and his team injected themselves with what they believed would be their salvation in a war that this country demonized, to the two mad men and their who yo see this disastrous plan through the end. ...Great to read, better to listen to for the full impact of the first VX99 soldier that survived a 12 year nightmare.
