Summary

The Beast Realms are under threat: The land, water and air are poisoned. Its leaders are power-crazed and its people are divided. Worse still, strange and powerful Beasts have started dropping from the sky, causing carnage.

With the Beast Realms in turmoil and a ragtag group of insanely strong assassins on Team Venom’s tail, their chances of survival are slim. Escaping through man-eating jungles, seeking allies in underwater and treetop cities, Art and his team need to forge alliances to grow stronger.

As he grows in power, Art is able to unlock more and more secrets of his Gray Knight class. But skill alone will not be enough - to beat the overwhelming odds, he must tap into the unbridled power of the Beasts themselves....

Change is coming and the weak will die out - unless they evolve.

Storytelling at its best

I loved book 1. This one was even better! Evolution of characters, skills, and the world.

Loads of great new species, classes and beasts in this story. There were unexpected twists and turns, plus great character building (I even liked the out-of-game bits). The world of Beast Realms expanded so much, it felt real and like a game I'd love to play.

Art's new abilities are so cool and he uses them in really clever ways, and Nails' evolutions are so much fun without becoming too OP. The story was really well paced, it never let up and was hard to stop listening. Also Nux is brilliant, if you like a well written female character who kicks ass (with a massive spider) then this is for you too.

The narrator, Travis, did a great job again. His voices helped bring the story to life, and WOW he can sing!

I can't wait for book 3.

Learning about the Beast realms

I hadn’t heard about this series of books, but now I’m very interested in listening to book One. There were some parts that perhaps were a bit slow, but I think they were perfectly balanced with the more high speed action segments. I did loose track of some of the character names... but I will be honest I was doing multiple things at the same time as listening to the book. I really can’t get enough now of these books, so I will have to save in my piggy bank for book one and the others to come!!! Hope you keep this level of awesomeness for a story line!!!
It took me sometime to realize that the story is happening in a cyber context, so the fact that the main characters are going about through their own lives while playing the game of the Beast realms would feel odd. But I believe this would be the same thing for any person living 2 lives, one in the real world and the other in a virtual one. Again I think I need to get the first book to have a better context as to everything that happens in Evolution. As such I’m thankful for such a rich story!!!! Never give up!!!!

Bland story, bland characters

Our main character, Art, doesn't come across as very bright, which you can tell just by listening to the dialog. But he also makes several poor decisions, which the listener knows will lead to trouble in the end. These aren't part of Art's makeup, rather these are tools the author uses to move the story in the direction he wants, which makes it lazy writing. If you want to build an admirable character, then you need to figure out a way to get him into trouble without making it his own fault.

Then there's Art's character build, which is just a mess of wildly unrelated skills, none of which are particularly powerful. Art makes a virtue of this mess by trying to keep all of his character traits balanced, meaning that he's not very good at anything. There's just nothing about his character that stands out, making it a boring one.

I've got about 4 hours left in the audiobook, but I keep looking at the timer hoping it's about over. I might just quit.

Beyond Amazing

This book was beyond amazing I really enjoyed Art and Knox’s journey. It made me think back of when they first met, they were kind of like oil and water, but they learn to work together I love the part with arts companion with his healing or salve. I look forward to reading the next book when it comes out.

A bit of a disappointment

While I enjoyed R.P. Jones' Book 1 for a novel use of bugs and lizards for protagonists, for the same reason, and more, I lost interest in book 2. The series is now clearly focused on environmental destruction on both Earth and the virtual world which came off as close to fanaticism on the main characters part. Also, a supposed unknown antagonist, when revealed, was not hard to guess even from book 1. I had also thought that the series would be YA-appropriate but with the number of f-bombs being dropped, I find that is no longer the case.

Travis Baldree's performance was well done and, regrettably, the only thing that allowed me to finish the book.

I'll not be following the series.

Loved it.

Lots of action. Love the relationships between the characters and their beasts. Wish there was less singing. Travis Baldree does a fantastic job, as usual.

Got predictable towards the end.

The author switches between 2 slightly different writing styles during combat. If he describes an action in detail, you can bet that action is going to fail. After realizing this, the book became very predictable.

great story but...

The overall story is great, but I feel like it's full of pointless battles and dumb decisions. You don't have to choreograph every single battle or encounter. Sometimes it's ok to just say "And they defeated the chimps". I feel like half the book is long drawn out fights. That isn't to say that I don't like those kinds of fights, I just don't want to listen to one 1/2 hour fight after another. After a while all the fights follow the following formula. Every fight has to have some struggle followed by a narrow victory. It bogs down the pace of the story. And then there's the dumb decisions to make the team struggle against enemy's that they should beat easily. like, the team struggled against a mage with one gem of power when they had three gems between them! How can this one mage be so powerful against them when, about 10 min later, they go on to defeat an enemy so powerful it can wipe out a whole city??? But putting aside the problems I have with the fights, the story is interesting and I'll buy the next book to finish the series.

excellent addition

evolution brings a refreshing take on the middle half of the series. it's challenges to the main characters are noticable and it provides excellent build up to the last book in the series. very intense moments and overall I loved it.
