About this listen
Step into a dark, dangerous, intoxicating realm with cinematic world-building. Explore slow-burn romances, epic magic systems, fated bonds, hidden identities, stunning plot twists, and banter that will make you blush. In a kingdom on the brink of rebellion, a fugitive hunted for her bloodline faces twisted memories and rising darkness in pursuit of the truth about who she is and a way to bring down a sinister monarch.
For decades, a tyrant half-breed king has held the Magus throne and kept the magic-born in chains. That's all about to change...
In the mortal world, Ophelia Dannan is withering on a farm in old New York. She spends nights counting stars, avoiding the vigilance of family, and plotting to seize her freedom. But as memories of strange places and times surface, she suspects her life is nothing like it seems.
For four years, three protectors have shepherded Ophelia between mortal and magic realms, twisting her memories to keep a dangerous secret locked inside her safe. But when she slips through their fingers, crumbling their scheme, it propels them straight into danger.
As he king's armies give chase and a dark force rises to further threaten Magus, the four are forced to seek the truth of Ophelia's identity. Loyalties, love, and sacred friendships unraveling, they must face the fears and feelings that fester—and a powerful new enemy no one’s certain how to conquer—or they and their kingdom may fall into darkness.
Enjoyed by readers who loved A Court of Thorns and Roses, Shadow and Bone, Mistborn, Fourth Wing, and Throne of Glass. If you love a strong, clever heroine like Nynaeve meets Jo March, fell to your knees for the Darkling, and need an anti-hero that brings Kylo Ren energy, the Whispers of Dust & Darkness series will have you obsessed!

I would have dnf this by chapter 6 if the book itself wasn't worth fighting for.
However I bought the ebook as the story was really interesting and I wanted to give it a chance and I'm so glad I did! seriously this audio book really ruins it because its absolutely enthralling! what a plot and with such depth and forboding! I was really surprised which was good in a way because it meant I got to experiance the story like a new reader.
This has a very rich fantasy world with complexity and attention to detail that I don’t often see. dark atmosphere aside, the content itself was very mild. More to a YA extent. but, as the author has said that the rest of the series is going to be more adult so ill hold judgement for now.
The world building in this book is done so very well. I love the fact that there are parallel universe’s and different time periods running at the same time- this was the first time I've read this type of world building and I thought that it was really interesting and extremely well executed! I was not confused by the time jumps or the different worlds and found this really added to the story.
The characters were AMAZING, the plot was creative, and the setting was beautifully dark and gothic. Sarah Zimm executed a perfect rotating POV, the variety of POVs gave a highly effective story telling experiance.
there are a lot of side characters that come along, which wasn't confusing at the time, but when they were mentioned again later on, I had forgotten who they were and why they're now important. (However this could very well have been because of the narrator not drawing my attention properly)
Narrator is not suited to this book!
