Summary

In the sequel to the critically acclaimed The Strange Case of the Alchemist’s Daughter, Mary Jekyll and the rest of the daughters of literature’s mad scientists embark on a madcap adventure across Europe to rescue another monstrous girl and stop the Alchemical Society’s nefarious plans once and for all.

Mary Jekyll’s life has been peaceful since she helped Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson solve the Whitechapel Murders. Beatrice Rappaccini, Catherine Moreau, Justine Frankenstein, and Mary’s sister, Diana Hyde, have settled into the Jekyll household in London, and although they sometimes quarrel, the members of the Athena Club get along as well as any five young women with very different personalities. At least they can always rely on Mrs. Poole.

But when Mary receives a telegram that Lucinda Van Helsing has been kidnapped, the Athena Club must travel to the Austro-Hungarian Empire to rescue yet another young woman who has been subjected to horrific experimentation. Where is Lucinda, and what has Professor Van Helsing been doing to his daughter? Can Mary, Diana, Beatrice, and Justine reach her in time?

Racing against the clock to save Lucinda from certain doom, the Athena Club embarks on a madcap journey across Europe. From Paris to Vienna to Budapest, Mary and her friends must make new allies, face old enemies, and finally confront the fearsome, secretive Alchemical Society. It’s time for these monstrous gentlewomen to overcome the past and create their own destinies.

Enjoyable continuation of the club

I enjoyed this adventure as a follow up to the first book. The characters are starting to feel like family, and I'd like to see what happens to them next.

Fantastic!

The follow up to The Curious Adventures of the Alchemists Daugher is wonderful.

An exciting adventure across the Austro-Hungarian Empire, with many more intriguing characters met along the way.

The characterization of each of the characters is impressive, I have no idea how the narrator can keep up!

Another engaging adventure by The Athena Club.

Considering that overall this cast of characters is set in London, and written by an author born in Hungary, but raised in the US, this doesn't fall into many of the traps of similar books, which lapse into American grammar on a regular basis. There are odd moments that single it out as American, but they are few and far between, and certainly don't detract from the story.

The narrator again does a good job at the English accents. Very few American narrators can manage this feat. As with the grammar, there are the odd word that is a give-away, but again, not enough to detract from the story.

The Athena Club; set up at the end of the first book, find themselves in Europe, trying to help another young lady. Sherlock Holmes doesn't feature as much this time, which I think is a good thing, because it allows the characters to grow into themselves much better. While his help worked well in the first book, to have him too involved in this tale would have made the role of the strong women almost meaningless.

It isn't a swashbuckling story from beginning to end, but its cast of characters are cleverly woven together in a tale that keeps you interested until the final conclusion.

I'm hoping we'll get many more adventures of The Athena Club, as they could easily carry many more stories of adventure without them becoming stale.

Absolutely fabulous

Kate Reading as a narrator literally cannot do wrong. She can breathe life and substance even into a weakish story. In this case there was a solid writing with delightful characters to support her . I was able to listen at 1.75 speed and still not lose any nuance of emotion or detail of the plot.

Highly recommended!

Entertaining

Woven from many stories to create an individual novel. Diverting and full of interesting detail

an engaging tale

this book fantastically continues the adventures of the athena club.

my only, very small, issue is that, like the first, it's a book written from the point of view of english women & narrated by an actress with an RP accent. This means that the American idioms in the text & the American pronunciation of some words (puma being the most frequent offender) do take one out of the story somewhat as they jar. but that's just me being picky.

Excellent

I am not sure how to describe this book...or the first volume in the series .. except to say that a mix of the characters with the surnames of Jekyll, Hyde, Holmes, Frankenstein, Dracula and many more , lead you to a tale of strong women (and a teenager) who take on the world of so called monsters and, in some cases, turn our expectations of those monsters upside down. The narrator is also excellent, she has a wonderful range of vocal talent and captures each character very well. Can't wait for the third book !

A sequel in every way as good as its predecessor!

I am very glad to know that this series will continue. The first volume, The Strange Case Of The Alchemist's Daughter, introduced us to Mary Jekyll, daughter of Doctor Jekyll, Diana Hyde, daughter of Mr Hyde, and the other members of what became the Athena Club. In this volume, they travel to Vienna and Budapest, to rescue the daughter of Doctor van Helsing, who, like themselves, has been subjected to cruel and invasive experiments by her father.

Comparisons to Kim Newman's monumental Anno Dracula series are inevitable, but I admit I find these books much more satisfying. There is a certain pleasure in Newman's box-ticking approach, whereby you know that every literary and filmic vampire you ever heard of, and a few more besides, will eventually appear; Ms Goss's method is both more selective and more eclectic, and there is a special delight in discovering that a name, casually dropped in the first volume, does indeed refer to a story and a character you know. I am not going to spoil you for any of these, but the double revelation in the last chapter is particularly pleasing.

Again, the characters are well-rounded and easy to identify by their voices, admirably articulated by Kate Reading. They are also easy to identify with and feel for. Again, we are given editorial comments by the characters, and I love these. Hints have been dropped that Mary, superficially the most "normal" of the Club members, is in fact herself not entirely "unmonstrous," and I look forward to more elucidation of this, to see if I have guessed right. I'd particularly like to see what would happen if someone slipped her a noggin of Dr Jekyll's original mixture...

I have a theory (since I haven't yet read the print versions of these books) that there is a UK and a US edition, and that it is the US edition that has been chosen to make the audiobook. That would explain the continued presence of Americanisms that would not have been common in Britain in the 1890s--"sidewalk," "snuck," and so on. Whether it also explains Diana's uncanny command of twentieth-century American slang ("That is so ger-ross!", "Get on with it already!", and so on) I don't know. They do sound odd in Ms Reading's British accent. This is still, though, a tiny niggle and does not, for me at least, detract at all from the pleasure of listening.

I recommend this book most heartily, and will be waiting avidly for the next volume.
