Summary
Detective Inspector Faro has reopened the case of the 'Gruesome Convent Murders' for which one murderer has already been caught and executed, although he claimed to be innocent of the second murder. Faro's stepson Vince is determined to help with the detection. Behind the middle-class exterior of Victorian Edinburgh society lie betrayal and greed. The list of prime suspects is long because many had good reason for silencing the lovely, exotic, and amoral Lily Goldie, and even a police colleague is under suspicion.
Alanna Knight is still writing new mysteries and has just written her fiftieth novel. Enter Second Murderer is the first in the series featuring Detective Inspector Faro.

Good story spoilt by the narration
Would you listen to Enter Second Murderer again? Why?
Possibly - but only if I had nothing else to listen to. The story is good but the narration by Robert Powell is poor - definitely not his best performance.
How could the performance have been better?
The attempt at Scottish accents was dreadful. The story is set in Edinburgh and yet many of the characters were given Glasgow accents. I wish whoever selects narrators would select Scottish readers for Scottish stories. The false accents grate on the ear.
Any additional comments?
I have listened to, and enjoyed, all of Alanna Knight's 'Rose McQuinn' series - about Scots and read by Scots but this was a disappointment.

Outstanding!
What a great story! The mystery is twisted and the characters are wonderful. The narration was terrific.

A mellow cup of coffee
What did you like best about Enter Second Murderer? What did you like least?
I liked the main character, the Scottish detective. Very likable and believable character. Does not have the flaws of most fictional detectives, he is not going through mental health issues or addiction issues, and he is not arrogant nor all knowing. You feel like he is someone you might meet on the street, if your street happens to be in Scottland.Didn't like the occasionall drifting of the story away from the main mystery to tangential domestic dialogues between the detective and members of his household. I guess the author thought it added to the realism of the character, I felt it just detracted from the main story.
Would you recommend Enter Second Murderer to your friends? Why or why not?
Yes, it is a good mystery, not a great mystery, but a good mystery and a relaxing read. Like having a mellow, not a strong, cup of coffee.
Have you listened to any of Robert Powell’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Never listened to his others. He was great in this one.
Could you see Enter Second Murderer being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
Not really.
Any additional comments?
Give this one a try. You will definitely enjoy it, if you like a good mystery. But I warn you, it is not a great mystery. It is a police procedural set in 1870s Scottland. Not a Sherlock Holmes type tale. Going to try another one, because I like the main character so much. More like a light book for a day at the beach, not one you are going to stay up late at night reading because you can't wait to find out who is the murderer.
