Summary
THE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER
'A darkly gorgeous fantasy that sparkles with snow and magic, this book wholly enchanted me' Sangu Mandanna, author of The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches
Enter the world of the hidden folk - and discover the most whimsical, enchanting and heart-warming tale you'll read this year, featuring the intrepid Emily Wilde. . .
Emily Wilde is good at many things: she is the foremost expert on the study of faeries; she is a genius scholar and a meticulous researcher who is writing the world's first encylopaedia of faerie lore. But Emily Wilde is not good at people
So when she arrives in the hardscrabble village of Hrafnsvik, Emily has no intention of befriending the gruff townsfolk. Nor does she care to spend time with another new arrival: her dashing and insufferably handsome academic rival Wendell Bambleby
But as Emily gets closer to uncovering the secrets of the Hidden Ones - the most elusive of all faeries - she also finds herself on the trail of another mystery: who is Wendell Bambleby, and what does he really want? To find the answer, she'll have to unlock the greatest mystery of all - her own heart.
'Forget dark academia: give me instead this kind of winter-sunshined, sharp-tongued and footnoted academia, full of field trips and grumpy romance' Freya Marske, author of A Marvellous Light
'A thoroughly charming academic fairy tale, complete with footnotes and a low-key grumpy romance' Guardian
'Enchanting in every sense of the word. . . This book is real magic' H. G. Parry, author of The Unlikely Escape of Uriah Heep

Beautifully written fantasy novel
I absolutely loved the story, although the narration took a little getting used to. I’ll be honest by the end, I enjoyed the voice acting and felt it suited the characters well. The author draws you in with well defined characters that you grow to care about and a well crafted world. Highly recommended.

A most excellent book
I absolutely adored this book, I thought it was wonderfully written and narrated. The setting was so vividly described I could easily imagine it and the folklore was interesting. I enjoyed the story and the characters were exceedingly likable, especially the juxtaposition between the characters of Emily and Wendel. I'm looking forward to the next book!

Excellent all round
Brilliant story and performances from both narrators. The ending was the slightest bit rushed, but all in all an experience I was delighted to have.

Like a warm hug
This was a lovely whimsical read. A relatively low stakes, low angst trip through Faerie & I throughly enjoyed it. I’m not on the edge of my seat waiting for the next instalment, but will definitely be getting the next book when it comes out. More the feeling of wanting to revisit friends than dangling from the edge of a cliff.

Folklore and academia in a perfect blend!
As a folklore lover and someone slowly shifting from the genre of “dark academia” to “light academia” these days, I loved this! (Side note. The main character reads to me as someone on the spectrum and I was happy to see some representation there, but maybe that was just my interpretation?)

LOVED IT!
what can I say, I have a soft spot for faerie tales, Irish men, and feisty women. what luck that this book had all three and was narrated so beautifuly. I love the twists and turns and the creepiness of the faeries. I loved the character development of Emily just as much and it's been a long time since I have grown to love side characters as much as I do these. AND THAT ACCENT!!!! Wow.. made me blush
