Summary

The Emperor needs necromancers.

The Ninth Necromancer needs a swordswoman.

Gideon has a sword, some dirty magazines, and no more time for undead nonsense.

Tamsyn Muir’s Gideon the Ninth unveils a solar system of swordplay, cut-throat politics, and lesbian necromancers. Her characters leap out of the audio, as skillfully animated as arcane revenants. The result is a heart-pounding epic science fantasy.

Brought up by unfriendly, ossifying nuns, ancient retainers, and countless skeletons, Gideon is ready to abandon a life of servitude and an afterlife as a reanimated corpse. She packs up her sword, her shoes, and her dirty magazines, and prepares to launch her daring escape. But her childhood nemesis won’t set her free without a service.

Harrowhark Nonagesimus, Reverend Daughter of the Ninth House and bone witch extraordinaire, has been summoned into action. The Emperor has invited the heirs to each of his loyal Houses to a deadly trial of wits and skill. If Harrowhark succeeds she will be become an immortal, all-powerful servant of the Resurrection, but no necromancer can ascend without their cavalier. Without Gideon’s sword, Harrow will fail, and the Ninth House will die.

Of course, some things are better left dead.

Critic reviews

"Tamsyn Muir's absorbing storytelling and Moira Quirk's immersive performance create a richly imagined fantasy world.... Quirk is at turns antagonistic, vulnerable, and hopelessly helpful as she characterizes all the participants and stewards of Canaan House.... Listeners will eagerly anticipate the trilogy's next installment." (AudioFile Magazine)

Great time spent.

Well this was a treat. As with all books I was not sure what was going on. Annoying teenager, very odd magic system which did mke sense latter on.

Great narration. Concentration needed. listen twice!

My favourite book series !

I absolutely love this series, I’ve read through Gideon Harrow and Nona before but the audio narration of this was great! I really enjoy Gideons perspective in this book, and how every re read you pick up on so many little hints about the progression of the story that you missed the first time round. This story is full of humour, mystery and queerness in the best way possible.

Moria Quirk did an amazing job narrating this and I can’t wait to listen to Harrow and Nona next!

A great book masterfully narrated

I could listen to this entire series on repeat forever. The stories are intricate and engaging, the characters are relatable and interesting, the magic is unique, and it’s all so well written.
Moira Quirk is an incredible narrator and has really brought it all to life. The voices are unique for every character (and consistent throughout all the books!) and none of it feels forced or gimmicky. I’m SO glad I bought this as an audiobook rather than on kindle, I genuinely think you’d be missing out by reading it in another medium.

A Rampant jaunt

The story and the story telling is brilliant and follows the ever bullish and naive Gideon is a great jaunt with magic, necromancy and sword play,

Loved it!

Definitely something else. It's been a long time since I didn't see the total story pan out before it happened however these plot twists I didn't see as many of them coming and that was a delight.
I loved the dark atmosphere of the world and story.

Humourous skeleton fantasy

This book is an absolute gem - weird and wonderful in all the right ways. The humour is as dark as a moonless night, but it's so sarcastic and clever that I couldn't help but laugh out loud. Gideon's witty banter adds a light-hearted touch to the otherwise gloomy world. With a plethora of characters to keep track of, it's a bit of a challenge, but definitely worth the effort for such an entertaining read
