Summary

A SUNDAY TIMES BEST PAPERBACK OF 2020!

WHEN THE DOORS CLOSE, HE’S GOT YOU…

It begins on a Monday, when four people board an elevator in Manhattan. Each presses the button for their floor, but the elevator climbs, non-stop, to the top where it pauses for a few seconds, before dropping.

Right to the bottom of the shaft.

It appears to be a horrific, random tragedy. But then, on Tuesday, it happens again. And when Wednesday brings yet another catastrophe, New York, one of the most vertical cities in the world is plunged into chaos.

Clearly, this is anything but random. This is a cold, calculated bid to terrorize the city. And it’s working. But what do these deadly acts of sabotage have to do with the fingerless body found on the High Line?

It will be a race against time for detectives Jerry Borque and Lois Delgado to find the answers before a deadly Friday night showdown.

Number one bestseller Linwood Barclay returns with a heart-stopping thriller which will do for elevators what Psycho did for showers and Jaws did for the beach…

Critic reviews

Praise for Elevator Pitch: "This novel moves as fast as a falling elevator and hits with just as much force. Linwood Barclay is a stone cold pro and Elevator Pitch is a shameless good time."(Joe Hill, number one New York Times best-selling author of The Fireman and Strange Weather)

Praise for Linwood Barclay: "A suspense master." (Stephen King)

"One of the world's finest thriller writers on the top of his game." (Peter James)

What Goes Up Doesn't Have to Come Down After All!

This is an entertaining read from Linwood Barclay, of course it's a little bit up and down but I thoroughly enjoyed it. While Barclay might not have quite delivered on his publisher's promise of something that is 'all too plausible' this starts well and produces a very compelling ending.

My first thought on reading the blurb was that it all sounded a bit gimmicky and contrived, after all why would anyone find such a convoluted way to conduct a reign of terror? Barclay won me over well before the end though and I will warn you that it like me you have a fear of heights and a sometimes too vivid imagination then this one likely will cause you some vertigo! And speaking of imagination Barclay's ability to conjure inventive ways of using an elevator to terrorise people was disturbingly impressive.

No audio book can be complete without a good narrator and McClain produces a very good performance. He's got great gravelly tones and an impressive wide range of voices to give the characters.

If you want a thriller that takes an innovative new approach to its terror and delivers characters you can really get into I think this is definitely one to put on your shortlist. It starts on the up and finishes there too.

SO GOOD!

Suspense! I have read most of BARCLAY's books; this is one of two that I consider the best this year in the genre. This is movie material.

Whoa!

Elevator Pitch is such a clever book. The story is carefully constructed with a number of seemingly disparate threads that slowly come together into a rich and beautiful tapestry. Linwood Barclay has created something very unique here and that's really hard when one considers how many murder mysteries there are and how many detectives we meet in the wonderful world of fiction. I loved the detective duo and was thoroughly invested in their success. All the characters are so well drawn and credible, with realistic dialogue and relationships. Once I'd pressed play I couldn't press 'stop'. The story moves along briskly and is so utterly compelling I had to keep listening for the ultimate outcome. I would have said there were no new ideas in the modern detective murder mystery genre; I would have been wrong. A brilliantly written, fantastically narrated tale that will have me thinking twice before I get into my next elevator. I am highly recommending Elevator Pitch by Linwood Barclay, you can thank me later!

Another great book

Have read all the books by this author and am never disappointed but this is one of his best. Absolutely loved it and the narration was excellent too.

Very enjoyable.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book by Linwood Barclay, excellently read by Johnathan Mc Clain. I don’t think it is his best book and I’ve read most of them, but it’s well worth a listen. I especially enjoyed the last chapter which is a talk from Linwood himself! Giving us a small insight into his writing. I have to agree with another reviewer that I didn’t particularly like many of the characters. The one I did like turned out to be the killer, so perhaps I’m not the best one to judge.

Faced paced and gripping with a nice twist

I didn't want this story to end! This was my first Linwood Barclay book and it won't be the last.

long winded

I had been looking forward to the release of Linwood Barclays latest.... the idea behind the story is good, but it's so slow.
too many characters, none of which are particularly likable, and a whole lot of book about not much....
I will be returning it...
