This selection of Poe's critical writings, short fiction and poetry demonstrates his intense interest in aesthetic issues and the astonishing power and imagination with which he probed the darkest corners of the human mind. This rousing sea adventure follows New England boy Pym, who stows away on a whaling ship with its captain’s son, Augustus. The two boys repeatedly find themselves on the brink of death or discovery and witness many terrifying events, including mutiny, cannibalism and frantic pursuits. Poe imbued this deliberately popular tale with such allegorical richness, biblical imagery and psychological insights that the tale has come to influence writers as various as Melville, James, Verne and Nabokov.

Story
This is a story from the Fall of the House of Usher collection. The horrors of the Spanish Inquisition, with its dungeon of death, and the overhanging gloom on the House of Usher demonstrate unforgettably the unique imagination of Edgar Allan Poe. Unerringly, he touches upon some of our greatest nightmares: Premature burial, ghostly transformation, words from beyond the grave. Written in the 1840s, they have retained their power to shock and frighten even now.

Story
Edgar Allan Poe elevated the gothic story, developed the unreliable narrator, recast psychological terror, and reveled in both the horror and the supernal beauty of death. From Poe's rich, unrivaled imagination comes a collection of his most masterful works, including "The Black Cat", "The Fall of the House of Usher", and, of course, "The Tell-Tale Heart". Each story explores morbid themes of grief, greed, fear, and guilt, and together they embody Poe's grotesque obsessions...even the dread of being buried alive.

Story
Few serial killers in history have garnered as much attention as Jeffrey Lionel Dahmer. Although Dahmer killed 17 young men and boys, it was not so much the number of people he killed that makes him stand out among famous serial killers, but more so the acts of depravity that he committed on the corpses of his victims. In this true crime story, you will listen to how Dahmer transitioned from a loner to serial killer, committing numerous unnatural acts along the way such as necrophilia and cannibalism.

To the children, the town was their whole world. To the adults, knowing better, Derry, Maine, was just their hometown: familiar, well ordered for the most part. A good place to live. It was the children who saw - and felt - what made Derry so horribly different. In the storm drains, in the sewers, IT lurked, taking on the shape of every nightmare, each one's deepest dread. Sometimes IT reached up, seizing, tearing, killing....

Excellent Narrator Brought The Story To Life
Would you consider the audio edition of Edgar Allen Poe's The Tell-Tale Heart and Other Stories to be better than the print version?
Who doesn't like Edgar Allen Poe? I listened to it during Halloween just for fun. I'd read this in high school. It was better listening to the tale being read to me.

Very short and very dark
STORY (classic) - This short audiobook (1 hr, 1 min) contains three of Edgar Allan Poe's short stories. The first is The Telltale Heart, which we've all read in high school, and it was my runaway favorite. The second one was -- meh. The third was very good, especially the ironic ending, but it contains some animal cruelty which I didn't enjoy. Thankfully, the description of the cruelty was short and to the point instead of graphically described.
The stories all revolve around mentally disturbed main characters who commit some form of murder. Poe also seems to have a propensity for his characters to have an evil eye or an eye missing, and his murderers all hide their victims' bodies behind a wall or in the floor. Makes me wonder about Poe as a person and about his childhood...
PERFORMANCE - The reader did a great job, especially performing the madness at the end of The Telltale Heart. There was, however, something going on with the recording quality in the third story. It was as if the tape in a cassette recording was getting hung up as it was playing. Distracting but tolerable.
OVERALL - Recommended for high school students or older, male and female alike. It's worth the hour I spent listening and the 95 cents or whatever I paid for this Daily Deal, but that's about it. There is no cursing, but be prepared for sinister psychological stories and some brief animal cruelty.

The recording is bad
For most of this audio production, I enjoyed what I think of as a visit with an old friend. I've long loved the stories of Edgar Allen Poe, including those contained within this audio production.
At first, I was not sold on the narration, as the narrator seemed to smack his lips and run short of breath. However, as the intensity of the story increased, so did the quality of his performance.
My issue, however is with the production quality. In the final story, there seems to be a problem with the recording, It reminded me of a warped cassette tape and was quite frustrating.

Worthy of Five Stars, but...
Anyone familiar or just taking an interest in Poe's work is going to love the performance, and the selected works. Classics all.
I didn't want to downgrade the performance, but they don't have an "Audio Quality" rating.
The performance was masterful, but there's a hissing in the background. Sounds like this reading was converted from tape. I'm sure most people won't be bothered, but as a purist, it bothered me quite a bit.
A wonderful addition to my library.

worst production values ever from Audible
What would have made Edgar Allan Poe's The Tell-Tale Heart and Other Stories better?
better production values
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
I've loved these stories for 40 years, and this is the first time I have had a hard time getting through them,
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Earl Hammond?
The narrator was ok, I don't have a better candidate in mind.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Edgar Allan Poe's The Tell-Tale Heart and Other Stories?
none.
Any additional comments?
This recording sounds like a bad 8-track tape on a dying player. In some places, the recording was so garbled I could barely understand the words. This was a waste of money!

I will always love Poe
I think the recording is good as the narration spot on. I sped it up at 1.5x... Otherwise it felt draggy. These awful tales never fail to be awful. Poe was a master at madness and that downward spiral. Pulling his character and the listener downward together.

Forgot why you rarely see The Black Cat
Any additional comments?
Absolutely BRILLIANT reading of Poe--by far the best I've ever heard. Hammond gets inside the author and his character in a way that really makes me not want to meet him! He really grasps the twistedness of what Poe tells. But I forgot that the reason we don't see or hear the last tale often is its' content--animal cruelty. As soon as I remembered what was about to happen, I had to shut it off, knowing that I couldn't bear to hear such a good reading of such a profoundly disturbing story. Wish he had read The Raven in its place. This is the definitive narrator for Edgar Allen Poe. I now will give up trying.
