Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

Discover the thrilling origin stories of the bard Edgin, the barbarian Holga, and their whole adventuring party in this official prequel to Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.

Edgin Darvis' life is a mess. All that he has left are his lute, his dashing good looks, and...not much else. After a chance encounter with badass bruiser Holga, Edgin is forced to take a hard look at his bad choices. But the road to redemption is long, and paved with unforeseen expenses. Fortunately, the world is full of rich fools begging to be parted from their money.

And so Edgin and Holga do what any sensible entrepreneurs would do - they form a crew.

Joined by a charming rogue, Forge Fitzwilliam, and Simon, a sorcerer with an intense inferiority complex, the team sets out to line their pockets with both well-earned and ill-gotten gold. Together, Edgin's crew battles monsters across the realms: gnoll raiders, fey witches, and more fall beneath their sharp weapons and sharper wit. But when they encounter a new, more sophisticated villain, keen blades and piercing blue eyes may not be enough.

Their target? Torlinn Shrake, a wealthy eccentric known for abusing his servants and hosting lavish parties.

The plan? Play dress-up, sneak into the Shrake estate, and fill their pockets with as much loot as they can carry.

The catch? Shrake is hiding a terrible secret: one that could endanger the lives of everyone Edgin has come to care for - even if the loot is too good to pass up.

Great Listen

Watched the film before listening to this, and what an experience it was. Loved the voices by the narrator (especially Forge and Holga). It had a detailed and exciting backstory of which would highly reccomend, but probably you should watch the film first. I will most definitely listen to this again.

if you love the film like me you'll love this

fleshing out the characters and feels like a great accompanied audio book to the film, all the characters feels true to their film counterpart especially Holga. The voice performance is good obviously different to the film but I'd say his Holga is best and his Edgin voice is probably my least favourite. Fantastic book, performance and can recommend if you are on the fence

Great fun.

I enjoyed the new D&D movie and book is a great companion piece. It captures the fun and adventurous tone quite well and I thoroughly enjoyed delving deeper into the character’s backstories. (There’s not necessarily anything new here but a lot of flesh is added to relationships and character interactions particularly between Edkin and Forge that I found very enjoyable). Overall it’s a great bit of fun for fans of the movie and people such as myself (aka casual D&D players.)

Exactly what you'd want from a book like this

A great adventure to introduce the characters to us and get to spend a little more time with them. There were some lovely, really well depicted scenes for various characters' first meetings (Forge and Edgin's was my favourite) and the narrator did a great job of catching the personalities of each of the characters.

There was also enough references/terminology for D&D fans to appreciate without making it inaccessible for those who've seen the movie but not played the game.

My only criticism (and it's such a minor thing) is that it felt like a book of two halves, more like two separate novellas than a single over arcing plot. But nonetheless it's still a 4 star story and told by a 5 star narrator so worth 5 stars overall.

Fun and adventure

Well narrated, forming a decent back-story for the main characters of the film (minus Doric who has her own story). It’s not bad, funny in places, and fleshes out the characters decently.

Very fun enjoyable D&D tale

To those who have seen the movie like myself first, the story is a Princess Bride bedside retelling of the origin of the crew with most of the characters who are present in the movie. Not being the same story as the movie gave a different fresh light to the characters and was very fun and enjoyable to listen to, action, drama, feels and funny.

A Nat 20

loved this book, I may be a bit bias as I have played D&D for most of my life, but the story and performance were excellent, with it's little hidden Easter eggs dotted about relating to the game, one couldn't help but feel connected on a personal level.

What an adventure!!!

First of all I watched the movie before I read this book and I liked to point out the details from the movie that’s in this book. And I loved the performance by Fred Berman!!! He really was a good fit and sounded like the characters from the movie! Overall an amazing origin story!
