Summary
From the best-selling and award-winning 'master of the spy thriller' comes a collection of riveting short stories.
When a man's wife leaves him under suspicious circumstances, he sets off in search for her, unprepared for the guilty secrets he's about to drag back into the light.
A man is tempted by a luxury apartment with a top-of-the-range kitchen. But there is a heavy price to pay for this glamorous new life.
And a couple with their marriage on the rocks go on a hike through the Derbyshire countryside as another way to avoid their real problems.
Hailed as the master of the modern spy thriller, Mick Herron's skill for tension, humour and memorable twists are captured in his short stories, collected here for the first time.

Short stories ruined by "quirky" performances
I have really enjoyed every book written by Mick Herron. Until now. The short stories which comprise Dolphin Junction are probably pretty good. I'm unable to judge, because ( with the notable exception of Sean Barrett) I was totally put off by the exuberant, "aren't I being funny?" narration, especially by the female narrators. It was like an exaggerated Alexander Armstrong gabble and by half-way through "The Other Half" I gave up.
Never thought I would do that with this marvellous writer.

Ruined by poor narrators (NOT Sean Barrett)
Mick Herron plus Sean Barrett is a dream combination for me. And there's another stand-alone Jackson Lamb story! There should be so much to enjoy here.
What a pity, therefore, that the rest of the collection should be spoiled by the other very poor narrators: sing-song, mannered little-girl voices, a slow male voice making interesting lines dull.
Narrators, listen and learn from the peerless Sean B!
I can't imagine who at Audble is choosing and allowing these recordings.

Great Stories But Virtually Unbearable Narration
I'm half way through and the stories have been great - kind of Stephen King style macabre and not what I am used to from Mick Herron but still very compelling.
My complulsion to write a review at this stage is driven solely by the absolutely terrible narration so far! I mean unbearably bad. Currently listening to The Other Half and it's the same female narrator from one of the previous stories, All I can say is I have never in my entire life heard anyone speak with these speech patterns. Imagine putting the inflection of EVERY single word in exactly the wrong place, then you will be half way to understanding how incredibly irritating this is. The other narrators have been only marginally less awful.
I am persevering because it's from one of my all time favourite authors AND because Sean Barrett narrates one of the later stories. If I had not known about Herron's work previously and not listened to the Slough House series there is no way I would have listened beyond the first couple of minutes.

Narrator gets in the way
i devour Mick Herron's books, but never before on audible. The narrator, while suffering blocked sinuces, attacks each syllable with relish and Dick Van Dyke level accents. It all gets in the way of the story.

Didn't hold my attention
I have really, really, enjoyed past Mick Herron works but am sadly underwhelmed by the Dolphin Junction collection. I've read most, though in the present days of isolation I have learnt to enjoy walking whilst listening to audio tapes, including his last couple of books. Maybe this is the problem but for the first time none of his characters nor plots have held my attention. Whether it's the mixed choice of narrators or the the substance of the stories I've found my mind wandering off and having to rewind repeatedly. At the end of practically each story I've wondered what was the point of that? I appreciate these are short stories and as such have a different rhythm and structure to the novel. So this collection is different and, I think, sadly lacks the wit, charm and comfortable thrill of his previous books ..... but then a writer shouldn't be expected to keep to one style..... and I maybe going senile anyway!!

Let down by narrators (Sean Barrett excepted)
I have enjoyed all Mick Herron books to date but am sadly underwhelmed by the Dolphin Junction collection. None of the characters had any real depth and there was no real plots to speak of. And the narration.....Hey ho. Roll on the next Slow Horses novel!

Patchy!
The short stories are really a stopgap until the new Jackson Lamb novel comes out later this year, and it worked for me. The jewel is, of course, the Sean Barrett narration of the JL story which was really enjoyable.
As for the others, they are still interesting, though I agree that the narration of them was sometimes annoying and other times OK. For me it was the high-pitched excitement style, like a new puppy bouncing around, which I found most difficult. We are all so used to the wonderful tones of SB which serve to enhance the words and pleasure of any story he reads.
However, being a narrator is a not any easy task, especially when the characters are so diverse, I couldn't speak in a male voice and I assume that men trying to speak in a female voice is equally challenging.
The story lines did enough to hold my attention, and attention was needed in a couple of them to follow the plot, they are not all a light listen.

Check you can handle the narration?
The direction for this recording must have been a bit odd: Sean Barrett is predictably good and Emma Powell is fine but the other readings are over-dramatised, with the performances getting in the way of the good writing.
Better to read the book. Maybe Audible will re record it.

Fantastic
A wonderful collection of short stories by the master of black humour. The narration is superb with some of my favourite narrators making the characters come to life.

Terrible narration.
I love Mick Herron books but the narration by the female reader was so terrible I had to turn it off and return the book. Truly awful. First time I've ever returned one.
