Summary

Practical advice and hopeful encouragement for the tough yet rewarding transition to parenting grown kids.

If you have an adult child, you know that parenting doesn't stop when a child reaches the age of 18. In many ways, it gets more complicated. Both your heart and your head are as involved as ever, whether your child lives under your roof or rarely stays in contact.

In Doing Life with Your Adult Children, parenting expert Jim Burns helps you navigate one of the richest and most challenging seasons of parenting. Speaking from his own personal and professional experience, Burns offers practical answers to questions such as these:

  • Is it okay to give advice to my grown child?
  • What's the difference between enabling and helping?
  • What boundaries should I have if my child moves back home?
  • What do I do when my child doesn't seem to be maturing into adulthood?
  • How do I relate to my grown child's significant other?
  • What does it mean to have healthy financial boundaries?
  • How can I support my grown children when I don't support their values?

Including positive principles on bringing kids back to faith, ideas on how to leave a legacy as a grandparent, and encouragement for every changing season, Doing Life with Your Adult Children is a unique book on your changing role in a calling that never ends.

Not for everyone

Good narration and read very well. Good advice if you can zone out to the constant references to religion and faith. I couldn’t.

Practical advice

I wish I'd known these practical tips earlier. I have 4 young adult sons and have been stumbling around doing life with them. Ive got very discouraged but now I know how to go through this stage with more confidence. Thank you!

Too much Christian religious content.

Everyone, no matter what their religious beliefs if any, could be helped. But all the focus on a Christianity detracted from the work.

Disappointed

It’s religious so that should be highlighted before you buy, I was disappointed by the book

2stars due to the religious angle

Just to warn those who are not religious that the author is. There is quite a bit about religion and his kids not keeping close to God or going to church. As an atheist this was disappointing and not overt in first glance.

God, jesus and faith .... shud have looked into this before purchasing. A total waste of my credit and do not understand any intelligent person referencing everything to God and Jesus

Too much religious content

Didn't finish it I'm afraid which is a shame because if you take away the extreme amount of religious Christian content, the fundamentals behind it are good and make sense and are useful. I got half way through, learnt a few things but couldn't bear to listen anymore to a) the religious speil and b) the narrator's accent.

Disappointing

The publisher should make it clear on the cover that this is by and for Christians. I would have avoided it.
