Summary

This story deals with the first great and documented humanitarian tragedy in African history. The East African slave trade, the lesser known of the two branches of the African slave trade, flourished in virtual anonymity as the attention of the world was focused on the abolition of the Atlantic slave trade and the destruction of slavery in the Western hemisphere. Doctor David Livingstone, the great Victorian missionary explorer, devoted his life to witnessing and publicizing this grotesque African trade.

The Universities Mission to Central Africa was the first orchestrated intervention in the South-Central African region, and it is a cautionary tale for centuries of similar efforts to follow.

Best book I've read in ages.

Just a few words to recommend this audiobook, which is clearly and engagingly read by the author. Unexplored Central Africa, the brutal East African Slave trade, Christian faith and Empire dreams, all intersect to produce a true story of brave but tragic adventures in a world of The Heart of Darkness. The twists and turns are many. The real life characters grapple with seemingly insurmountable challenges....illness, the brutal slave trade, personality clashes, near starvation and death. Is their faith rewarded? Can It even hold? It is sorely tried, that is for sure. As a Christian it is an especially challenging read. Yet God's ways are not our ways....

Only one small gripe. The book starts with a quote from the Old Testament prophet Isaiah Chapter 6 v8 but misidentifies it as Chapter 8 v1.
